Memi Kakizaki has become the latest idol to fall victim to obsessive “fans”, having announced her retirement from Hinatazaka46 after a recent handshaking event.
While Kakizaki did not give an official reason for retiring as an idol, the 17-year-old singer had been a victim of stalking, leading to an official announcement on Hinatazaka46’s website claiming that rabid otaku were harassing the girls at their homes; the blog post threatened to report future offenders to the police.
The singer has said that she plans to leave the entertainment industry completely, living the rest of her life as an “ordinary girl”.
Kakizaki is far from the first idol to suffer at the hands of crazed otaku; NGT48 were recently disbanded and relaunched after Maho Yamaguchi was attacked outside her home.
Furthermore, teenage AKB48 members were maimed by a saw-wielding NEET at a handshaking event several years ago, and Mayu Tomita was almost killed after an obsessed fan plunged a knife into her neck when he felt that she failed to appreciate a “gift” he sent her.

Well yeah. Some hardcore superfans would pay tens of thousands of yen on CDs for their idol group to do their vote thing(AKB48) or handshake events. Some would even buy anime boxsets just for the tickets inside if its an idol series or some s♥♥t. It’s good for those who want cheap Japanese anime boxsets if you know where to look online.

They really need to work way harder on the security for these poor girls, it’s obvious that the fanbase is beyond insane and has to be kept in check.
Unfortunately, you can’t have 2-4 security people on 24/7 standby at each idol’s location. They’re just not worth that much money. Idols really come by the dozen these days. Fans are one problem, but the production companies also treat them like throwaway products.
‘Security’ in Japan amounts to a few fat unshaven slobs standing around. No firearms, not even batons.
