Firewatch’s Publisher Releasing Handheld Gaming Console

In a surprise announcement and website reveal, Panic, the publisher behind indie walking simulator Firewatch, has entered the console market with a handheld called the “Playdate”.

As far as controls go, the Playdate comes equipped with a d-pad, two action buttons and a crank – it will also have a black and white screen and come with 12 different games, which will be gradually unlocked on the system on a weekly basis.

The developer of the console made sure to go out of his way to explain that while the crank is an interesting gimmick, not every one of the Playdate’s titles will be utilizing it:

We weren’t kidding about the crank.

It flips out from the side, a rotating analog controller that puts a whole new spin on games.

Some games use the crank exclusively (like Crankin’s Time Travel Adventure, above.) Some don’t use it at all.

But it’s very fun. Extremely fun.

The official Playdate Twitter account has followed up the announcement with a series of tweets explaining how they conceptualized the handheld:

Some may be skeptical whether or not the Playdate can deliver a better experience than a classic Tiger Electronics handheld (which in itself wouldn’t be saying much) – the Playdate is scheduled to launch sometime in 2020 and will cost $149.
