Sony CEO Will “Combat Video Game Addiction”

Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida mentioned in a recent interview that they are going to create countermeasures against video game addiction, mostly as a response to the World Health Organization attempting to formally recognize it as a disorder.

Speaking to various news outlets, Kenichiro Yoshida had little to say on the subject:

“We need to take it seriously and adopt countermeasures. We’ve already implemented a ratings system (to restrict players by age) and have been taking measures based on our own standards.”

Considering Sony achieved a net profit of ¥916.27 billion for the year ending in March, the company has a strong reliance on the success of its games, though rather than letting individuals be responsible for themselves, Sony seems to be planning to act as parental figures for their consumers.

This is further evidenced by Sony’s “protect the children” mentality when it comes to censoring the sexy content of Japanese games; the company seems intent on being against what consumers want in games, despite being a producer of video games.

The WHO will be including gaming addiction into its International Classification of Diseases at an annual assembly soon, providing help for health professionals by allowing them to report such cases and create measures against them as well as treatment.
