Nintendo Crushes Go-Kart Company

Go-Kart and cosplay rental company MariCar has become the latest victim in Nintendo’s recent crackdown on supposed violations of its intellectual property.

Tokyo-based go-kart rental company MariCar has been successfully sued by Nintendo, resulting in them being barred from renting out Nintendo-themed cosplay outfits and forced to pay an undisclosed sum to the embattled multinational.

MariCar, which attracted some attention this year after a foreign karting enthusiast mowed down a cyclist on the streets of Tokyo, had built its business around allowing its customers to cosplay as characters from the Mario franchise and drive go-karts through the Japanese capital.

Nintendo took exception to this business model and sued the company on the grounds of copyright infringement and damage to Nintendo’s brand. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the courts sided with Nintendo, whose market capitalisation is currently around $60 billion.

According to a statement issued by the video game producer:

We intend to continue taking necessary measures to protect our company’s intellectual properties and brands, which were built up through many years of hard work, from actions that would damage them.
