China School Removes Cafeteria Chairs to Promote Studying

A Chinese school has removed chairs from its cafeteria so students will have to stand while eating, a move they theorize will force students to spend less time eating and talking and more on studying.

The chairs were removed at a Shangqiu school in Henan:

An interview with a school employee (who stated that it should take about “10 minutes to eat a meal”) also detailed that additional “standing” zones will be implemented for proactive students who want to spend even less time in the cafeteria.

According to some of the students, the school might have been inspired by China’s most revered cram schools – though one student from such a cram school noted that they at least have benches to sit on during breaks..
