Temporarily deviating from the topic of specific anime and manga, this new ranking has asked voters about the ways they believe otaku have evolved the most since the Showa era (1926-1989), with some of the mentioned points likely still having some currency even today…
1. It Was Believed All Anime-Lovers Were Depressed
2. “Yaoi” Was Used Instead of “BL”, “Doujin Onna” Was Used Instead of “Fujoshi”
3. Fans Did Not Call Themselves “Otaku”
4 (tie). Those Who Loved Anime and Manga Were Treated Coldly
4 (tie). Doujinshi Could Only be Purchased Through Mail Order
6. Doujinshi Creators Would Publish Their Real Names and Addresses In Their Works
7. No Idols Claimed to Be Otaku
8. Anime Had to be Watched on Prime-Time Television
9. If You Wanted to Re-Watch Anime, You Had to Record It With VHS Tapes
10. There Were Not As Many Cosplayers
And what does that mean? That anime is actually awesome, and all those fucks who told you’re a childish creep for watching anime or reading manga, can go f♥♥k them selves right up their sorry asses.
Yeah. I’m a mature creep!
Yeah. I’m 10:01 and I am an edgy little shat who hates and trolol anime.
The quality of art has gone up.
“Doujin Onna”, nice one.
Nobody called themselves “otaku” because its an insult and its not only anime related word. Very similar to “weeb”. Funny how meaning of both words disappeared when time passed, hardly anybody remember what they actually mean.
Nerd used to be the same in the west now you get people calling themselves that and the word isn’t much of an insult nowaday.
And n♥♥♥♥r used to be a normal word but now everyone gets offended if you use it. Funny how language devolves.
Pretty sure that started off as an offensive word and remained offensive. The only thing that changed was that being openly racist is now shunned in many places here so that’s not comparable. It never became an accepted word or description of one’s self.
Nonsense, black people call themselves niggers all the time.
Nobody thinks that that is wrong.
It wasn’t an offensive word. Just think back to family friendly works like Tom Sawyer (Mark Twain) and the character “n♥♥♥♥r Jim”. It was just a normal word at the time.
I still remember in the past most people look down on video game and think it’s a hobby for nerd or kid and computer is for nerd no need to learn how to use it.
Funny how most things you to do now are need a computer and some people starting to called themselves as a nerd, tech savvy and the like.
Hard r is the racist word but a is something only blacks can say
n♥♥♥♥r – racist
Nigga – only blacks
On the other hand, outside Japan, people proudly identify themselves as otaku, whilst weeb is considered to be the derogatory term of equal level.
I’m just a fan of anime.
The word “fan” also has an interesting history and originally was reserved for fucking crazy people. It’s an abbreviation of “fanatic”, after all.
Same. I don’t like the word otaku and I dislike the word weeb. Weeb as a word sounds obnoxious before even attaching its negative meaning.
Fan for life.
