Secret of Mana Comparison: “Hollywood Take Note”

A side-by-side comparison of the original Secret of Mana with the upcoming remake has astounded fans as the similarities between the two are endless, a fact that has many wishing that Hollywood movies were so thorough when it came to adapting anime – though some may no doubt complain anyway due to the game’s lack of change.

The comparison video:

Secret of Mana can be acquired for the PS4, PC and Vita on February 15th.

Ah the decaying remnants of the original squaresoft, your money is gone because you took too long!
I'm not impressed at all, having sold my ps vita years ago for the sheer lack of good games
Too little too late, if they had listened to fans about ff7 and all the other rereleases they'd be number one again...sheer stupidity since they became square enix

that's just dirt cheap 3D, how can anyone praise this? the colours are so diluted it's just super cheap overall

Wished they just updated the graphics and kept it 2D. Loses its touch with those 3D models and looks even more childish than it needs to be.

The 2d imagery has a certain charm and life that is lost completely in many 2d-3d remakes.

Hoepfully, with more advanced cell shading we can get back to those kind of detailed environments while being better to look at. Like Dragon Ball Z Fighter,

They did update the graphics. Keep it 2D? The fuck, do you people even know what you want?

Can you even visualize a "better 2D" when the original game's graphic is pretty damn good on it's own whilst remaining faithful to the original? I seriously want to know what you think what your idea of updated 2D SoM is. Best I can imagine is copying the style of later Mana games, but even then that's not even much of an improvement.

Like, have you fucking SEEN what the FF5 and FF6 2D remakes turned out like? Some shitty ass upscaled and filtered look. Do nearest neighbor? At that point may as well just play the original on a larger resolution.

Childish in what way? Light colors? Just like the original game? Childish because of it's simplicity? I guess games like Wind Waker are also childish. Let's be real here, how old were you when you played the original SoM? I'm pretty sure most of the people here here who played it were kids. Like, what? Lmao

Google search Dragon Crown, Odin Sphere / Muramasa Demon Blade. Of course, retaining the top-down view with that better art style.

Ya, because the FF6 remake was done half assedly. They didn’t even try.

The original had pretty great graphics for its time, this one don't.

This remake looks a lot like a cheap mobile game.It could be done better both in 2d or 3d.

I agree. If it was better 3D, I wouldn't mind as much, but this 3D looks on the cheap side. I would've preferred updated 2D visuals or a more cel-shaded stylized look.

This remake version looks like it's 14 years too late. The game fit the 2003 era of the PS2.

1993 - SoM on the SNES
    2000 - PS2 launch
2003 - SoM Remake on the PS2 (basically this thing in 2017)

The graphics just look too dated and not timeless. Would preferred they use art style akin to Dragon Crown, Odin Sphere / Muramasa Demon Blade, but of course not the style of side-scrolling gameplay.

Looks like a cheap android game, characters doesn't even move their mouths speaking and they're using the same chiptunes for the music instead of CD quality soundtrack. The original pixel art is so much better that it's not even funny.

My only real gripe is that the MC looks to be about 10 years old in the remake, when he should around the same age as the girl.

Graphics really just look like they made a vita game and decided to port it to other platforms, hopefully the PC and PS4 versions get some improvements.

Looks like something Nintendo would release...after censoring the fuck out of it and inserting crap dialogue that wasn't in the original. But I digress...this looks good.

As for Hollywood; I wish they would STOP taking notes, and just forget about touching anime/games/manga from Japan. They can adapt all the comic books they want, they're good at that...but failed at everything else from the East, time and time again.

The original still looks better. But then again, most 3D remakes of old-school 2D don't look nearly as good as the originals, especially if they make it on the cheap. Never underestimate how well sprites can hold up over time.

    "Hollywood Take Note"
As I look at this comment in the heading.

I never played the original Secret of Mana game. However, I could see that regardless of the platform change they were keeping quite faithful to the source material... something I really wish (myself) that hollywood would do when attempting to modify anime into live action adaptations... (or any animation to live action transition for that matter).

((Then again, maybe Square could use this as a lesson as well (right Final Fantasy VII remake?))

Because it's time to butcher FF7 Fandom.
The remake has nothing to do with the original directors to make a mark of themselves, other than a mark of loathe and anger.

They already confirmed the censoring of pretty much everything, removing jokes and making the game boring as fuck for all to unenjoy.

It's not even just that, I was watching a FF7 playthrough and the original exaggerated silhouttes of the characters are so much more interesting than the realistic remake shit. Especially Barrett.

Not only Hollywood, Is something companies that make remakes should learn too. Remakes should be exactly the same game but with better graphics acording to current times.

No, a Remake is not an enhancement of the original, that's a remaster.
A Remake is doing the same shit completely differently to annoy fans by removing key and most popular aspects of the original concept, look at FF7 ReMake.

Basically, they praise a remake because it's a barely enhanced port of the original. Remember how they blasted the FF7 port for PC for exactly the same reasons?

Just shows how nostalgia makes you stupid.

It was exactly the same game, they blasted it because a few years before they did the "Remake" video when they announced the PS3. Everyone ASSUMED that it was gonna be just like that - when it finally dropped it was just a straight up port and everyone gave them shit for 'deceiving the fanbase' and the whole muh nostalgia argument started out there.
