Nami-Against-the-Glass-by-Kyakya

A recent interview with Shonen Jump’s editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano has revealed that Eiichiro Oda (the creator of the seemingly endless franchise that is One Piece) wants to end the drawn out series as soon as possible, a feat that many doubt will be occurring anytime soon considering how much cash it is raking in.

When Nakano was questioned as to how much longer the series will continue on for, he had this to say:

“[I] don’t know yet because One Piece is a very popular manga in Japan and its popularity keeps on increasing and the storyline accidentally gets longer as it goes on.

Even Oda-sensei tried to end the manga as early as possible because it has become too popular.”

The interviewer also asked Nakano if the conclusion to One Piece has already been decided:

“According to Oda-sensei, I think he has a plot for the ending of One Piece. And nobody knows what Oda-sensei has planned for the ending. That is all in Oda’s head.

And because the storyline of One Piece keeps on getting longer, the plot that Oda planned sometimes changes based on the current events. It all depends on the situation.”

Many will no doubt suspect that Oda intentionally and rather understandably prolonged the series to take advantage of its popularity, making a clean ending even less likely…

May be he should start by shortening the arcs, Dressrossa was WAY too long, as candy island is.

Its a bit hard making progress fast if each small arc takes 3 years to culmine.

One Piece lost me during Dressrossa. Way too long, terrible pacing.

I like One Piece, but the pacing is dumb. It should have ended years ago. 2-4 years on the same arc is idiotic cash milking.

Most manga & light novel authors make it up as they go along. They have no plan, they just write to their next pay check.

This is why a lot of work goes off the rails, they have no idea how to maintain quality and have no choice but to drag it out as they have nothing else.

Worst pirates ever.... In 20 years, they didn't find yet the treasure "One Piece".
No doubt, the manga will be still published in 2027.

If each yonko arc takes nearly two years, plus another couple arcs are added to cover at least one challenger, raftel and a final battle with the world government, it very well could take the better part of two decades before concluding.

It takes about 20 years to quadruple the investment with 7% return rate, so I would be surprised if net worth was only 300% higher if he keeps drawing (though technically I guess his actual bank account could be 4x, as in short term spending money).

Like the author of Golgo13. He's like 80 or something and the series is still ongoing. Continuously since 1968. Stands at 185 volumes.

You know what happens when a story goes longer than the mangaka intended? BLEACH happens. It came out Kubo wanted to end Bleach but was forced to continue. Do they really want One Piece to go down that road? But knowing One Piece fans they'd defended even if it got terrible right up to the end like Bleach did.

Unlike Bleach though One Piece has the world building behind it that would allow it to continue for a prolonged period.

seems he and his comrades in the studio cashed in enough money. Funniest thing is that certain people believe he was "forced" or that this series had to be that long. No. The original plot was intended to be 48 episodes long MAX believe me. Then it became a success and he put more and more excrements between the start and the end.

If it really becomes too difficult for him to contonue working on, he should stick to character design and storytelling; let someone else bring that story to life. He probably already has more assistants working on it than any other mangaka.

I doubt after all this work that he'd make a messy ending. I hoppe that he plans to first make them defeat 2-3 yonko, exception being teach, then g et to one piece which also holds roger's deciphered part of the rio poneglyph, where robin finds something out and they then decide to take on the world government and end teach as their crowning achievements to free the world from the corrupt world order's heel.

I'd be rather disappointed if it just ends with them finding one piece, I want there to be a bit more.

I think oda wants to rush the ending to start a new project, you'd get tired of working on the same thing for so long right? But I bet he's had the majority of the story planned to the end for a long time now, and that we've already seen all major characters besides some world government bigshots. I suspect that the story may have been written backwards from the ending all the way to alabasta then the beginning up to that point being potentially written last, with all the details filled in as the manga progressed.
I think what he means by wanting to end it is to stop drawing suuuuuuuuuuuper prolonged chapters like that one time in dressrosa where usopp took a whole manga chapter (and on tv a whole episode :O ) to fire one shot, nothing else happened in it.

I think he wants to finish the story because he wants to see how we like his ending.

Yeah, because modern manga is so much more detailed and stylish, like that oreimo adaption. But hey, keep hating. Maybe one day you'll actually start believing being 'alternative' in a niche market makes you cool. Til then, you should find a nice indie coffee shop to hang out with like-minded people.
