North Carolina State University “Yayoi ≠ Yaoi”

Anchovy-Embarrassed-Book-by-Okitsugu

The Asian Cultural Studies class being held at North Carolina State University began covering Japan’s Yayoi era, the teacher in charge of the class however has made certain to clear up any potential misconceptions (for those not privy to common otaku terms and “hobbies”) by stating that the Yayoi era has nothing to do with “yaoi”.

According to one of the students, the class immediately burst out laughing due to a slide provided by the teacher (perhaps signaling that more are familiar with the concept of “yaoi” than some might be hoped):

The Reddit-goer mentioned that the teacher is known for utilizing unique methods to get his students interested in Japanese culture – on the third day of the class, he apparently showed the students the comedic-style YouTube video explaining Japanese history:

What Japanese thought of the matter:

“Now is the boy’s love period. The yaoi period was likely when stuff like Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya, Trooper were around…”

“I’m curious what kind of class it is.”

“Does yaoi really have such fame?”

“Showa≠Shota Like this right?”

“Isn’t he an interesting professor?”

“Yayoi and yaoi. If you forget one letter, it seems you could make a horrible mistake.”

“It’s already an obsolete word in Japan.”

“You damn fujoshi giving birth to the language known as yaoi is a heavy crime.”
