Anime Face Generator “Thousands of Possibilities!”

Artists in need of aid for creating original designs for characters may find inspiration from this recently surfaced website, as it allows visitors to generate completely unique anime faces based on selected specifications.

The options that users can adjust on the special website:

A mere handful of the thousands of designs that users can stumble upon, with art-styles ranging from 1997 to 2015:

Additionally, a technical report detailing the creation and devotion behind the generator was available at Comiket 92; naturally many are wondering what fabulous invention will be made next…

Aren't they scared of being sued for character similarities?

Doesn't look like a generator, rather just a random categorize of a preset list. It's like sankaku channel or any booru sites with only 1 random image that fits and less results.

That was my first reaction as well, but it is a generator, and a very impressive one at that. It's using Neural Networking based methods to do it and is far more intricate than a mere tagged database. Test it a bit more and it should become obvious.

Try generating a face with a full set of locked selections, and then switch the "noise" setting to fixed. Then switch any one or two settings at a time and regenerate. It will intelligently redraw and adapt things like the hair colour or style whilst keeping the rest the same. It's not using a "paper doll" type system either since it can do this actively across its hundreds of different portraits and art styles.

Here's some examples of starting with one generated portrait, and adjusting individual settings gradually to create new ones.
You can do this for any image generated.

Here's another example of similar portraits generated using the same settings, but random noise data each time.
Notice how several have similar features, but each time warped or realigned to fit other elements. You can also notice generation artefacts and imperfections. These weren't drawn by a human artist. They're each unique amalgamations of thousands of other images that the system was trained on.

"you clearly sound like you work there"

Ha! Fair comment I guess, but nah. Like that other anon says, I'm just a bit of a fanboy for neural network technology and it's potential. On the surface this anime face generator here might just be a cool toy with some obvious flaws, but mark my words, the overall machine learning technology behind it will be changing our lives in profound ways we've not yet imagined.

Might sound silly, especially being written on Sankaku, but wait and see. :)

You just can't understand his passion for ANN with its infinite possibilities. Either way, it's a great gem, now if only there's offline version.

Just warning you weebs, some of these randomly generated faces are abominations of nightmaric proportions.

You are bound to meet these abominations one or two times in this kind of system.

Tried it, and evidentally black hair is grey.

The ANN probably trained with mostly light-haired characters, since so many characters in anime/manga/CG have bright light hair. Hence the bias towards light-colored hair.

Now we wait for v2; generating high res images as oppose to now but they have first to train using a high res dataset

The computing resource required will become really huge. So it will be difficult, for the short term at least. I will probably recommend using MakeGirls to make your waifu, then resize it using waifu2x to make it higher resolution.

If you use a website to generate a character, it's not your "original" design now is it?

It's only for inspiration and maybe reference. Beside like science, in a sense artwork are derivative work (drawing style, techniques, etc). Something that's completely new is primitive and probably won't be as pleasing as time-tested formula of older works.
