An English dub (made possible by a Kickstarter that generated $318,784) will be arriving just in time for the 20th anniversary of The Vision of Escaflowne, with contributors being treated to a sample online to see if their kind-hearted donations have paid off – resulting in a variety of mixed opinions, as most English dubs tend to generate.

Some samples of the English dub for the anime and movie:

The BD/DVD for The Vision of Escaflowne is slated for release on October 18th.

It already had a dub and from what I recall, it wasn't that bad. There's literally no market support or reason to redub it.

Might be some shit about copyright property. It's not the first time the company that owns the rights to something dissapers and the rights end up in some strange limbo where nodoby knows who owns them...

Plus keep in mind it was a good story... kind of. It'll allow a new generation to get the BD with both so different people can see it in the method they want. Those of us who can hear the nuances in the Japanese and enjoy its performance will enjoy it, but these dubs are quite good actually.

As much as I liked the series overall it shit all over itself in character development, but it was good up until how they ended it. It still holds up today overall.

Now that I've seen the fanparody Nescaflowne though, where the mechs are actually giant coffee machines, I never need to see the show again, because Nescaflowne was perfect.

Liked, and still likes all the versions of Escaflowne without the dub. However, who cares about any dubbed anime, especially ones as old as Escaflowne on an adult anime news blog.

I've still have my original Bandai DVD box set with 16 year old Maaya Sakamoto in her first major seiyuu performance. Extra's included videos of her singing all the songs that appeared in the series plus Japanese cast interviews including score composer Yoko Kanno.
I could really give two shits less about a new English dub.

    Wow.... i mean just wow.

    350k into the gully.
There's a reason i still like to watch the japanese org with subs. Or even without any at all.

English and German Voice Actors SUCK ... and the recording studios SUCK too xD.

Can't beliefe they funded that xD.

Escaflowne is a great Anime ... sadly the dub wont make it any better then the last one.

If Sankaku was smart enough to watch the videos they link, they would know it has both dubs and the orignal Japanese cause it literally says it does.

Yea, it was fine. Pretty bizarre combo of shoujo/mecha, but combat was well done and the characters generally interesting.

But hey, anything is better than the general moe-crap that gets the views these days.

Eh, I got the Bandai Entertainment "Super Legends" DVD set of the complete series (sans movie, which I never cared much for anyhow) at a Salvation Army thrift store a couple of months ago for all of $10.

From what I hear of the new dub, I don't think I'll be missing much if I don't buy essentially the same thing all over again. Not that I can't hear an improvement over the old dub, just that I'm not enough of a dub fan to warrant buying it again.

It's freaking ancient. And it's some weird mix of shoujo/mecha, with some pretty brutal scenes (lots of people getting crushed in their medieval mechs).

At least the german dub was really good, it really can compete with the jap dub.

One might not be able to give an fully educated opinion on voice-acting not in one's own native tongue if one does not speak the language but one might still be able to pick up some acting qualities like how well an actor can emote no matter how unfamiliar the language may be.

For some reason they're having a man voice act Dilandu.

I think this is a good thing, if it's even decent, kickstarters to bring content from overseas to be more accessible for audiences is a good thing, and may be the beginning of a good trend.

I was at the dub screening at Otakon and the Japanese director loved the new dub. He even said it was like the Japanese actors came over and did the English version too. So shut up you sub elitists and let people enjoy the way they want.

tfw you contribute on average $150 and switch to japanese voiceover while watching.

Typical SanCom comments on english dubs:
    "OMG DUBZ SUCK, SUBZ FTW!"
"WHAT A WASTE OF MONEYZ, ENGLISH ACTORZ SUX!"
    "OMG, ANIME IS RUINED!"

If you want everything to be Japanese, why don't any of you just leave and live in Japan instead of complaining?
    Fucking sub purists.

Actually the reason they redubbed it is that when they got the transfers to do the new blue rays they found extra cut footage that was not origionally dubbed. So they added the footage back into the episodes and gave it a new dub so that things would flow properly.
