Blizzard Purging All Overwatch Porn

Delicious-Dva-Oshiri-by-squidsmith

Blizzard have been excoriated by their own community yet again due to their attempts to purge all adult parody works based on their newly launched FPS Overwatch, a seemingly impossible task if ever there were one.

Ever since its open beta on May 5th, there has been a rampant increase in erotic Source Filmmaker videos for the highly controversial Overwatch, with popular adult video provider Pornhub having previously revealed that searches for the game on their site had elevated by a whopping 800%.

This astronomical boom in titillating content had caught the attention of Blizzard (likely due to the aforementioned statistics hitting mainstream sites), prompting them to start doling out DMCA take-down notices – which have already afflicted a number of renowned ero-SFM creators:

Blizzard-Overwatch-Porn-Expunging-1

Blizzard-Overwatch-Porn-Expunging-2

Blizzard have yet to provide the reasoning behind their witch hunt, though it is assumed to be an effort to keep up appearances rather than a serious effort to purge the offending content from the Internet, with such an explanation being further supported by the fact that the take-down notices have apparently been issued through other companies to keep Blizzard’s name directly out of the conflict.

Thankfully the event is unlikely to harm 2D illustrators (who can easily file DMCA counter-notifications on the grounds of protected parody speech), only those directly using Blizzard’s official models as many Source Filmmaker creations tend to do – the purging however will likely only pump up demand for Overwatch porn harder still.

No one uses actual game assets when making WoW porn, its all hand drawn or fan made models, thats the difference.

You have no idea how wrong you are, with that fan-made models part.

Most of it is drawn from scratch, but plenty of models exist and are used for porn. The models look terrible when compared against Mass Effect, Tomb Raider or Overwatch, but some people like making it and some people like looking at it. Studio FOW made one with Blizzard assets, and Blizzard went after them for it. It still exists of course.

I love how Blizzard apparently has some people in their law&copyright division that have to watch porn all day and check if there is any infringement. Can I get that job?

Because WoW porn is normally not specific or trademarked characters, while Overwatch porn does. That's the difference.

For an example. You can't draw DVA porn because it's against copyright laws. But if you altered DVA to use a different name and looks, it's legal because it's not DVA. Then all Blizzard could do is complain to the artist.

I wonder if this may have been done "solo" by some new hires. Blizzard's probably hired some new people so they can develop/support Overwatch and Hearthstone along their older franchises. If the teams are relatively independent, the Overwatch one may have received some rosy-cheeked hires that acted just like they were taught, but with zero actual experience.

Tho even with that theory I'd be wondering who would be inexperienced enough to believe they could make a dent in the R34 distribution for a hot topic AAA title.

Blizard cares about overwath porn because everybody else does it too. The news aren't said anything about wow porn, but they does announced that there are high amount of "overwatch porn" search in pornsites, so they need to make the appearance that their game is suitable to mirrors.

Doesn't make much sense as Blizzard should be used to this sorta stuff by now.
If something becomes popular there will be rule 34 of it no exceptions.

They either forget or they are dumb enough to try and break the law. Either way, there's still gonna be overwatch porn. Copyright has ton of loopholes even a large nation like china can hop through.

Overwatch is a phenomenon in that regard.
The game isn't even released yet, but in some areas it's 34 seems to top porn searches.
No other game/show has ever been porned out so much, as far as I know.
Hah, no wonder the morality police is upset.
Nevertheless, I'm sure we can look forward to many, many gigabites of more Overwatch pron being made in the next months or even years.

I'm sure Blizzard is aware of the Streisand Effect....so part of me thinks they're doing it just to get people talking?
Or maybe they just dislike people using in-game assets for porn?

Apologies for the wall of text before hand!

    Well here's the thing.
Popular game such as this has a reputation they wanna hold. Most likely Blizzard want the game to be competitive esports game in the future.

Let's say they didn't do anything about this.
They just let all the porn float around the internet.
Everyone gets to know the game just for the porn made out of it.
It kinda already happened. All I see is Tracers butt and d.va here and there.
There's more to this game than just the damn SFM 5sec porn loops that I see EVERYWHERE.

Is this the right way to do it. Dunno, at least they are sending a message they do not approve of it.
And that is totally ok in my book.

Will these copyright claims work? No, people will create porn out of it no matter what you do.

So what blizzard is trying to counter here?
Maybe the flood of porn or the fact that some people are stealing in-game assets, slap a vagina on it and make money on patreon using these models.

Hard to say but I think this is futile effort...
    Not like this Activision/Blizzard.

I mean, the whole net is already talking about Overwatch, porn is always popular, and R34 is more opaque than ever.

Pretty sure these headlines won't significantly increase the interest in Overwatch porn.

Nope, there can never enough of dramas and headlines, don't underestimate the vastness of internet... it's like another universe.
Say, if you only use English, you'll already miss out all the other hundred of languages that you didn't use. And even with that in mind you'll probably reach less than 1% of all contents available on internet in English only.

I don't believe that for a second. Some of those character models were basically MADE for porn, the way they were given form.

    Comment by Anonymous

It's about protecting the IP from being intimately related to porn when google searched. If porn comes up as one of the top 5 when you search "overwatch", from Blizzard's perspective, that's a pretty fucking big problem.

Some porn is fine, and in fact, you can't stop there always being some porn of any given franchise; it's when there is so much of it and it's so popular that it can overshadow the actual franchise itself. Especially when said porn is indistinguishable from in-game assets, aside from the added vagina, dicks and tits

    Comment by Anonymous
    20:31 30/05/2016 # ! Neutral (0)

hey! that's a good counter argument! the franchise doesn't have dicks, vaginas and tits, that means it's technically not overwatch!

Why dose end Square or Tecmo go after them? They may actually like the stuff with Tifa or Kasumi naked.
