And by "the best" they do of course mean, unsurprisingly, "the most popular".

    Comment by Anonymous

are you saying the best wouldn't be popular?

Perhaps the best sucks, and everyone hates it?

    You're making no sense

"Best" is entirely subjective. And without further criteria upon which to base a vote, such as best gunfight scenes, best mecha battles etc., then you will get people going "I will vote for anime X because that is my favourite anime".

This sort of mindset and behaviour exists in many communities, but is particularly prevalent within the anime community. And probably to the point of dominating it. And when the (vast) majority of people voting behave like this, then the concept of "best" is simply ignored and replaced with "popular". Because people end up voting for their favourite anime (within the action genre in this case), and the concept of best" becomes irrelevant. And the ranking of these lists is then decided purely by "number of fans". ie. by popularity.

Yes, "best" is entirely subjective. If we're talking entertainment, any of these lists will be based on preference, not anything you could measure objectively. I don't know why this needs any explanation, or why anyone says "this is a popularity contest.

Yes, surprise! If things are more popular, more people have watched it, giving it a better chance to be in a top list. If less people have watched or read something, how would it get enough votes to win?

Again, I'm surprised to see Gintama on a list. I didn't know it was that popular, but it deserves to be.

He trying to say: 'Something that's popular isn't necessarily the best.' (but that's how most voters will interpret the survey)

For example, Donald Trump is a popular man but not necessarily the best man. :P

I guess he means they don't even think on what the poll is about and just answer the shows the like more therefore this polls are just general popularity polls rather than polls about the best at X.

I always remember that poll about strongest anime character and Doraemon was there on the first spots.

Yes, we should redefine "the best" to mean "what this anon likes"

one piece bleach and dragonball? no please. There is very little to no explanation in the mechanics of their skills and moves. And whatever explanation they have doesn't make any sense: "Oh no! The seven dragon stance is weak against his raging typhoon kick!" It's like wtf? why?

    one piece lol...

i like one piece and all, but the battle choreography is meh at best.

especially the anime, and especially sword fights. Some of the worst sword fighting i've ever seen. (wait i don't actually think i've seen worse...)

Whatever happened to Rurouni Kenshin? In a fourteen episode sword fight, Kenshin could let his opponent land seven hundred, or so, lethal deathblows, cough up two hundred gallons of blood, and still crush them like a bug at the end with a brand new ultimate finishing move. How is that not badass?

Girls und Panzer felt like Initial D with tanks and the SFW just added a sports element to it. My R-rating fight scene winner is Hunter x Hunter, where the malicious intent of the fighters would definitely make any "do not kill" superhero like Daredevil stay the hell out of Hell's Kitchen.

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo have some of the best animated fight scenes, no flashy special effects, just well animated and perspective dynamic.

The same goes to some Macross fight scenes, extremely perspective dynamic. That also applies to the Bebop movie plane chase scenes which was done by the same people that did those Macross plane/mech fights.

Can agree with much of this. Can't agree with attack on titan, can't agree with naruto (naruto only knows like 4 combat moves throughout all of naruto, both the original run and shippuden). Tokyo Ghoul i can not agree with, nor Owari no Seraph, nor Girls und Panzer, and not even Evangelion.

I liked all of these animes (yes, even the outrageously overrated AOT), it's just that their combat wasn't very high end. I mean... Ok just look:

    Arslan Senki
    Kill la Kill
    Yamato 2199
    Hajime No Ippo
    Soul Eater
    Grenadier (B0000000000000000000000BS!)

I know SAO tends to get a lot of hate (I'm not too big on it either), but the action scenes are actually one of the only things a majority of people would praise it for, haters included. That said, this is one list where it deserves to place pretty well.

In a few years, after you've grown some pubic hair, you will hopefully come to realize that the battles in all long running shounen anime are generally awful.

My vote goes to No Game, No Life. The epic shiritori battle with Jibril is still one of the best battles I've ever seen.
