Final Fantasy XV “Might As Well Be An FPS”

Final Fantasy XV‘s newest trailer overflows with so many FPS staples – such as giant mechs and mounted guns – that critics are already dubbing it “Call of Final Fantasy” and decrying yet another apparent genre change.

The trailer, hailing from Square Enix’s “Active Time Report Vol. 7.0” live steam:

It has also been announced that Final Fantasy XV’s release date will be revealed on March 30th, though it is indeed certain that the title will make its way to players this year.

Sneaking has existed in JRPGs, the AI however is mostly shit enough to make that aspect pointless.

One tiny shooting bit so it might as well be an FPS? A bit of stealth for variety so it might as well be MGS? Mechs in a final fantasy game because what is FFVI and FFVIII??

Get the fuck out of here, fucking pissbabies.

Notice the quotes? The title is a reaction from the community, not from the site writers. "Retard."

On topic: I have no problem with the new combat. However, the camera in Duscae 1.0 was terrible. I heard they addressed that, but it was so bad I haven't bothered to reinstall the demo.

Sankaku don't always take direct quotes in their titles. Pretty sure they had shit like "We're not Trying any more" or something as a title quote from a developer so are you seriously telling me you'd trust them if they said that?

Is this a real Final Fantasy game? No, Its a complete different game that no hold to its predecessor but you can still called it FF but not real FF game because I cant see any elements of what make a FF a FF game.

    Comment by Anonymous

It's a real FF, know why? Because it's called Final Fantasy, that is not your decision to deny. If it's something you don't want to play because it doesn't fit your nostalgia goggles, that is another story. Expecting FF to be the same thing over and over is why people are complaining. None of the FFs have been bad games. Yes, including FFXIII series. It was not the best of the series, but that doesn't make it 'not a Final Fantasy.' Did it have flaws? Of course. Did it ruin the experience? For some. I loved it, even acknowledging the flaws. FF8 had the same complaints but everything accepted it as an FF as well even if the 4th disk was mishandled. FF10 is just as linear as FFXIII if not more-so, but nobody really complained then, so everyone just is not able to identify what they want anymore, and they should just go back and play what they want again.

The makers can label their bread as "cake". Doesn't make the bread cake, though. But I guess you'd have to refer to the bread as cake, because the creator said that's what it is.

Looks a lot smoother and refined than the demo.
The interface and mechanics look neater and seem to flow better too.
    They've really upped their game.

Not fully onboard with the sausage fest, but ah well, as long the gameplay and story itself is good, I can overlook it.

where did you get that little fanfic of gaming history

FF1 was '87 and they never made it "because the RPG genre is dead and this is what RPG fans would like to play nowadays."

    a) the rpg genre in Japan wasn't dead (we won't even get into the RPG genre in the West, which JRPG fanboys don't see to be aware existed even though Horii explicitly acknowledges Wizardy and Ultima as having been influences on DQ). Enix had released Dragon Quest right around that time which was already a huge new series

    b) they made it because they were on the verge of going bankrupt and Sakaguchi banked on making a game that riffed off that new take on RPGs that Enix had created with Dragon Quest (which would pretty much make the "JRPG" template, not Final Fantasy) and had already released 2 entries which sold huge numbers.

Maybe he was referring to the time they changed the formula from making your own characters at the beginning to having some characters you have to play as.

At least that was the time I stopped caring for FF. Story in RPGs.. pshh.. story sucks, just let me make some adventurers and kick ass.

Action RPG tripe -- use the move the game expects you to at the time you're supposed to and that's it. It should have been a gaiden game.

FF games should be turn based like all actual JRPGs.

I don't really like all this shooting, I'm more into swords and magic, but I'm glad it's not turn-based because now I can feel a much better harmony between the story and the gameplay.

I always got a weird feeling when I entered a turn based battle just after seeing some nice CGI scene where the characters were all acting naturally, in real time.

Obviously, it never happened when playing the 2d classics, I actually think turn based battles suit them perfectly.

    looks pretty good to me.

What I do fear is not that the gameplay's gonna suck but the story. I feel like the story of this game won't be any good after all the changes to make it more straight forward. I was really anticipating Nomura's melodramatic, soap opera, convoluted mess of epic proportions ala Kingdom Hearts but darker.

If anyone can define what a main FF title is, I might agree, but until then, it just sounds like you are dismissing a game because it's different to the rest of the games, which is silly because all of the FF games are different from one another. The only thing they really have in common is turn based game play, but besides that the the themes, settings, mechanics, etc are all very different.

In the year 2010, Square saw that FF13 was a huge mistake. Criticism was everywhere and well deserved. They also saw Xenoblade and how good that was. It still took them 6 years to make a copy. And since they are hyping it since forever, don't bet on it being a fun game. It will look amazing, but so did FF13...

Not the same guy, but this was originally Final Fantasy XIII Versus, an action game part of the Fabula Nova Crystalis bullshit. But when FFXIII failed to bring hoped results, the project was canceled. But with both games already in development, both Versus and Agito were released as standalone games, Agito became FF Type-0. Not sure why they decided that Versus was a good enough to be part of the main series but here we are...

Seems like its leaning more towards a character action game like the recent MGS or Bayonetta.

It's a trend towards getting rid of the slow pace often associated with RPG's.

I'm fine with the battle mechanics introduced so long as there is meaningful diversity in the attacks and not smash one strong attack repeatedly every battle.
