Not really, he's very capable as a candy store owner and pretty decent as an aspiring mangaka. He's not particularly interested in the plain girl and while physically attracted to Hotaru, that bitch is crazy and has made it very clear she wants to entrap him as a candy shop owner so he's right to stay off that shit.

If you watch the post-episode content, it looks like this show is literally a paid advertisement for candy, at least in part. Not sure if all the snacks shown are made by one conglomerate mega-corp or something, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I thought it was weird that they'd fixate so much on specific snacks during the episodes, but the post-episode pretty much explains it. Not that it can't still be enjoyable to watch though, I guess. At least they put in some eye candy too.
It's kind of a good fit, if you think about it. MC is an awkward aspiring manga freak, and the show displays the kind of junk food that nerds would typically like and buy at a local store. Frame it all around comedy and cute girls, and show clips of people eating and describing how great it tastes, and...
... Well, I almost hate to admit that it kind of works. Describe the taste of food, and it tends to evoke the watcher's imagination, like munching down on Umaibo and washing it down with a Ramune.
I don't think I ever had a Coca-Cola ad ever phase me, but after watching (Himouto) Umaru make a scene out of snacking and describing the biting taste of cola, she made me go out and buy a case.
