First I wanted to crack a joke at this about Nintendo targeting only preteens. But to be honest, this isn't much worse from than 96.8% of let's plays on youtube.
Funny, I thought this game was squarely aimed at lolicons. Look at the way those hips sway.
At least those gameplay commentary videos you speak of are self-aware and intentionally wacky, and the uploaders themselves recognize how silly it is. The video here suggests that it was actually trying to be serious and connect with its "target audience", which is, as the title here says, cringe-worthy.
You really think they are totally serious? You think when they did that litle Robot Chicken thing when Reggie used a fire flower and burned a guy asking about localizing Mother 3 wasn't "self-aware"? You think them having a Yokai possessing Bill and Reggie yelling at him for eating donuts is serious?
The are attempting to be fun sometimes failing at it. But the "cool" folks are like "Video games are super Serious guys no fun here"
They are serious in terms of actually trying to look funny for who they think would watch those videos, and failing at it abyssmally. So, yes, they ARE lacking self-awareness; that is why the video on YouTube has slightly over half dislikes, very unlike actual "Let's Play"s that have just about 1% dislikes.
Nintendo seems to try to make this playhouse kind of fun feel but seems to fail at it so it seems kind of sad and pathetic. Trying to marry corporate and fun is a fickle bitch, especially now when the fun old men of nintendo are dying and new ones are (I'm afraid) all business only no fun allowed money mongers.
Aaaaaaaand as I read that last line my hope for the future of video games died a little. Yeah, I'm afraid of the money-mongers as well. A few years down the line, and we might be looking at a new Konami-situation.

The same target that every western corporation thinks that a cartoony-looking product should have: kids. Yes, Nintendo is Japanese, but the YouTube channel hosting the video is from Nintendo America, and Nintendo America thinks that kiddy-looking stuff is for kids, and by "kiddy", they probably understand "anything made out of drawings or pixels that does not look realistic". That would probably include every single anime, I bet.
Why else do you think the video has more dislikes than likes..? These western corporation's marketing workers simply do not get it, even after all these years. It will be like this until their generation dies from old age and they get replaced by OUR generation's future marketing workers.
