Are you kidding me? You do know harems have been based off light novels, visual novels, and manga in which they came from right? You should also know that these books sold very highly before their adapted anime form right? As well as the fact that people loved said novels and manga that they wanted an animated version of their favorite series so bad that anime studios decide to animate it right? Most harems come from very popular series that a majority of otaku like male or female so if you don't like the show maybe its because they did a mediocre adaption from it;however many of them are actually enjoyed look at Fate Stay/Night. As for your question, firstly, girls seems to have the privilege of having weird hair color and not be judged heavily, in contrast, male characters having for example, pink hair wouldn't look too appealing to the mass. And can easily be attacked by haters calling them gay, so you get it.
