This is basically the thing.

It used to be that men an women couldn’t live without each other. Women needed resources, men needed domestic help, and thus love, sex and children came naturally out if it too.

Now men an women are expected to work as genderless standalone units. Given this is no wonder that about half of those standalone units remain standalone indefinitely.

  Personally I think FF7 combat system is overrated. Materia had the same “blank slate” problem that everybody criticized in FF8. Active Time Battle is an absurd joke. It’s garbage. At least FFX wasn’t ATB based. Kingdom Hearts system is proven and fun. My point being, sure they changed it but the original wasn’t all that.
