If you lived in the '90s, this was one of the premiere animes of the time. The cream of the series is the OVAs and Movies; the TV series were all okay, but a lot of repetitive jokes and fillers can wear out after a while.

Slayers NEXT is still one of the best comedy anime series of all time.

No way. Movies and OVAs were a clichefest with hardly a semblance of a story, built around jokes and fanservice. The TV series had an awesome story, especially NEXT.

Really? Because as campy as the TV series were, the OAVs and movies were infamous for squandering every joke through some of the worst delivery and timing in anime.

OVAs and movies didn't really stack up to the TV series for me. A big part of the charm of Slayers was the interplay between the characters and their vastly different personalities, and while Lina and Naga were a decent comedy duo together, it just wasn't as much fun. Lina's sarcastic humor works much better when she has a few straight men (or girls) to play off and Naga was so over the top. Another factor was the different dub casts because ADV got the OVA and movie rights, they didn't really match up to the SS cast to me although I've seen others say the exact opposite.

NEXT was the first anime I ever marathoned through all in one day, and the only reason I didn't marathon TRY the same way was because I couldn't wait to get started on it and watched the first two episodes, went to sleep, then woke up and watched the next 24.

Looks a bit small for a exhibit about a 25yo franchise... We need more installments!

Luna? She made a small cameo in the very beggining of TRY and I think she had another one in either Revolution or EvolutionR...

Really good times watching Lina the Dragon Spooker back then. I always found her sexy hot despite Gourry's making
fun of her flat chest. Happy anniversay Babe! I still
think about you and watch the DVD's I have every so often.

Light novels were first and they're best. I take quote from third of them:
There they were, standing right in front of us - lined up like an illustration out of a fairy tale: ten knights in shining armor. The sun gleamed luminously all around them, bouncing off the tips of their blades, so blindingly bright that the silver metal began to glow white. It was downright dazzling.
Gourry and I sighed, knowing that we both shared the same thought: what a bunch of dorks.

Unfortunately Tokyopop got only 8 of them translated & printed before closing down :(

The first two TVs were golden. They still above 90% of all fantasy anime released after that and certainly above all the fantasy shit coming out these days. Yeah I know, old fag rant blah blah blah. But honestly... you think you know better?

Nostalgia you are powerful, yes it has fillers ut thats part of the charm of Slayers and it was because the last episodes where always nightmare fuel without no play around, here evil guys dont play if they want you death.

with 90s remakes being a trend nowadays, i hope a studio will be brave and good enough to revive slayers.

i hope it'll be either mappa or madhouse.

I LOVE THE SLAYERS! They had the BEST English dub cast, too! If there a remake and there not a full reunion of this fine cast, then...

    Darkness beyond twilight
    Crimson beyond blood that flows
Buried in the flow of time
In thy great name, I pledge myself to darkness
Let all the fools who stand in our way be destroyed
by the power you and I possess...
    DRAGON SLAVE!

We all know how well dub companies really regard their actors, so... don't hold your breath. Plus I don't think Software Sculptors exists any more.

all we need now, is a good studio to revive it. parasyte and ushio and tora already paved the path.

In order for the desire for a new anime to be "stirred up", it has to have abated at some point.

Such a shame, I tried watching the anime and as much as I enjoyed it, I somehow could not be drawn into it. It ended up hitting me like a Slice of Life where I couldn't bring myself to marathon it, and only take it in doses. Granted I still find Lina's outfit ridiculously sexy, but there was just something about the show I couldn't get behind even though I wish I could have. Potentially because I watched it more recently and that era of storytelling now feels a bit dated I guess. Perhaps it'll regain its charm again since everything is in cycles.

Try the light novels instead. I also couldn't really get into any of the anime, but the novels are still good.

I know what you mean. I watched Slayers, Slayers Next and Slayers Try long ago (early 2000s), and while I enjoyed them, I don't know that I can bring myself to rewatch the entire series again.

The thought of doing so just seems so tedious, despite how much I really did enjoy the story.
