Western anime fans have revealed their favorite anime girls, for once selecting characters from shows other than Sword Art Online and other agonizingly popular anime.
The ranking, based on the number of times characters have been added to the “favorite characters” section of MyAnimeList users:

Maybe not quite the personal preference, but I'd agree with this list. It's OK in my books, since at least they didn't spam all the newest stuff nobody in the West even cares about.
Where is Oshino Shinobu on this list we all know she is the most popular girl in the Monogatari series. I love Hitagi and all that but we all know Shinobu is number 1. The fuck is Asuna doing on this list she is not even number one in her own crappy series let alone number 10 in a top ten list, kick that bland little sandwich maker off and put Shinobu in.
Mikasa Ackerman a character that got more and more dull as the manga went on has no right to be on this list either and really Yuno Gasai at number 1? what a bad joke this list needs some serious tweaking.

I am not 100% in agreeance with this list, but it's a pretty good one. I guess sometimes the most interesting polls are the ones you don't even know are being collected, such as ones that pull user data on random websites.

I work at funimation and I can tell you that mirai nikki along with Sao, H.o.T.D,Fate Series and Shingeki no Kyojin are considered to be 5 of the top anime to come out in the west in the last 10 years or so. now quoting you.

the reason why people in the west like women, like Yuno Gasai, Saber, Mikasa and Asuna is because their strong badasses and willing to do anything to protect themselves along with protecting their friends and people that they care about. people in the west hate women that are the damsel in distress type.

Because westerners is full of prides in general, even if they are extremely scared of something, they won't admit to it no matter what and instead put on brave fronts. In short, they don't like to be viewed as "weakling" as such, seeing weak characters is akin to seeing their past selves.
Your agument is fundamentally flawed. As you stated in the beginning the animes were popular, unless you argue that the animes were popular because of These strong women. The likely presumption would be that these women are popular because of the high exposure they got from the animes success.

I really still can not understand hatred for Asuna... in no way shape or form is she a bad character compared to other potentials, and Kirito and her have a natural relationship compared to most anime characters. For once it's a couple characters who are strong on their own, and not reliant on one another, but are better when they are together... you know... a healthy relationship and what relationships are meant to be.
Not a lot of people on this site are familiar with relationships...

I agree to a certain extent. I thought she was a really compelling and attractive character until they locked her in a birdcage... The first half of SAO season 1 was great though, and I thought Kirito and Asuna had great chemistry together. It made me emotionally invested in their story, and I actually cared about what happened to them. Can't say the same for a lot of other anime characters out there.
trapping asuna in a birdcage is one such grievance of the show overall. the others:
1: incest subplot. *stares at sugu with bloodlust*
2. no actual urgencey to get shit done.
3. rape implications. could've been handled alot better than this.
4. shitty ass bad guy.
5. shittier world used and abused repeatedly in too many fantasy type animes
6. end game deus ex. not my issue there, but it is with others

I don't hate her all the much, but I don't think she's particularly all that great either. Thus, it aggravates me to see her topping so many fucking lists (especially the one for best swimsuit; do people really think that crappy peppermint bikini's the best shit ever, or is it just more idiots fawning over her character and nothing else?).
I guess it's a bit old hat at this point, but I'm surprised Motoko from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex isn't on there. Everyone I know who has watched anime constantly names her as a favorite female character, guys and gals alike.
Did this site even exist when that show is on? I doubt that many older anime fans even bothered signing up for it.
It's a generally better list since it uses "favorites" from a site. Using that as a data point helps prevent the "what's popular right now" syndrome since favorites are long-term "votes". You'd have to put effort into deselecting a character. (Though it doesn't stop the "popular vote" from being made at the time the favorite was set. Still, it's more long-term than generic poll voting.)
Now this is assuming it's just raw numbers and they didn't normalize the dataset somehow.

These lists don't really tell us a lot.
They base the list on absolute numbers but it would be more honest to do it in relation to the number of viewers. For example the percentage of viewers who marked the character as favorite.
