The quickly ascending danger levels of One Punch Man have seemingly reached their zenith with the anime’s latest airing, as more formidable heroes are effortlessly dispatched by the show’s most powerful enemy yet; the fearsome foe being deftly eradicated by none other than Saitama’s one punch, possibly making all the drama pointless.

No matter how intense the fights are it kinda gets boring when you know Saitama will just win again with 1 punch. Kinda like watching a John Cena match
That's a major part of the commentary the series is following, even in a Shonen show you KNOW the MC is going to win. One Punch Man just distills the show down to the MC winning in 1 move.
I was never much of a shounen guy anyway. i really watch shounen that came after DB and the big 3
This guy watches SAO and Mahouka because there are girls that go after the MC.
I mean, that's the entire premise of the show: both taking the piss out of and celebrating asinine power level battles, specifically in a monster-of-the-week shounen format.
Combat's a big deal for most of the cast, but the main character is about everything else - comic relief, providing characters with a moral compass (intentionally or unintentionally), and to some extent getting caught up in social struggles he can't punch his way out of, if it can get under his skin.
At least for me, it doesn't matter that I already know the "punchline" of seriously built up battles eventually being ended in a nonchalant fashion. The execution of those jokes are what I really love. Plus, even if Saitama can survive everything the universe cares to throw at him, things can still get pretty dangerous for the rest of the cast. Well, about as dangerous as in most shonen series, which I guess is another trope OPM takes the piss out of.
I sorta liked it at first when I saw the cool fight scenes but when I later learned by looking at the manga that Saitama always wins it kinda took the joy out of me.
I guess it depends on the person but for someone like me whos gotten used to a set up where the MC would always win, it kinda gets boring especially in OPM's case where he wins with only 1 punch no less which is awesome but kinda anti climactic especially after ive seen one piece and every DB anime
obviously the series is not heavily focused on the battles nor the fact that he always wins, by one-punching every being that came across him; it's more about him being a hero.
about the first quarter of the series focuses on his personal struggles. initially a jobless man, he found his thrill and purpose in heroism, after the whole mess with the crab monster. since then, he aspire to be a hero thus he trained diligently. that, coupled with his pure desire to be a hero and protect innocents, culminates in him getting a body so strong, even a punch quakes the earth. thus begins his ventures as a hero in a suit. needless to say, he wins easily- too easily, in fact that he skims through enemies so fast, nobody even notices him in his heroic acts. also, the lack of enemies that can battle him on equal footing is lesser than nil; which over time causes him to lose the thrill altogether although his reason of doing heroism is pure. thus he had to push himself to grasp even the littlest motivation to do so even going as far as doing it as a hobby. thus, he continues his solitary way of unnoticed heroics everyday until genos came.
after meeting genos and joining the rank of 'ranked heroes' of the hero association, he had to deal with being a 'public, ranked hero'. sure, he doesnt mind being in whatever rank, as long as people recognized him as a hero- which is among the reason he starts the whole hero gig. still, it's not as easy as that. due to him being so OP even clearly above the highest-ranked heroes, his strength is too unbelievable people went into denial to the point that they accused him of cheating his battles and in extension, his position/rank as a hero on top of causing intentional destructions. even so, he let all that scathing remarks be bygone and continues on being a hero, the path that he's always proud of.
It's supposed to be a satirical take on most Shonen works like DB. If Goku, Naruto, Ichigo and Luffy need to get stronger to defeat their next opponent, Saitama subverts that by having his stats maxed out from the very beginning and one-punching whoever he faces.
It's obvious from the concept that Saitama will win against any challenger, but One Punch Man really isn't about the fight scenes (it's just part of it), but more of Saitama's struggle to being accepted by a society that sees him as a fraud because he is so OP.
The end game, of course is not only for general public to accept Saitama as a true hero, but for him to finally find an opponent in which he can unleash his true power. Right now, the Deep Sea King is a Demon Level threat. There's still the Dragon and God threats yet to appear.
Woah woah, hold on there. You're making too much sense, it's going to blow OPs head because he can't self insert himself into a struggling shounen protag that gets all the poontang.
@Anon17:51 Pretty much the same in every DC and Marvel comics
which is why i dont watch those at all
Imagine kids that imitated wrestling, now imitating this, and the news pops up a bunch of stories about kids killing each other with one punch.
except that this show isn't for kids it airs on 1:05 AM
Im sure the guy is comparing it to the predictability of wrestling. its an open secret that wrestling is scripted and no matter how impressive or intense the match may be the victor is already predetermined. the only thing is that its always Saitama who finishes them off and rarely anyone else.
Absolutely fucking amazing. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the direction the story is heading in, but whatever. These fight scenes are just too epic to not enjoy.
Hmm never got around to appreciating it that much compared to the others but I take it what makes this series so awesome are the fight scenes mostly?
that, and also the semantics of true heroism vs manufactured/paid heroics.
I guess I get it but then i dont really believe in true heroism cos i live in a very corrupt country and the only heroes i see are in the movies so this sadly doesnt resonate with me
it's a fictional animated stuff bruh. detach yourself from from reality while watching; it'll at least provide some ease from the burden of it.
Also it has really good comedy.
"Also it has really good comedy."

Even Jesus would NOW think twice before any action, in the real of the devil.
Jesus also died from nails, so yeah duh he is weak
16:29 anon, google longinus.
It makes fun of the average self insert hero.
I like that every other hero and villain even if they are retarded are completely serious while he is sort of not
it's mostly the novelty that attracts people,
what i meant is that we rarely have a MC who is that powerful right from the start~ it's hard to consider this shonen (since the definition of shonen implies a weak MC getting stronger litttle by little from training*** the typical shonen genre) this kind of novelty can become a new genre~ maybe
while i agree with everything you said, i think it's good to note that "shounen" simply means "young boy".
so as a genre, it is catered for "young boys~teenager". not saying everyone else have no right to read it.
also, if i recall, OPM is actually seinen.
Woah, the editors dropped the ball with this article. Isn't that the whole purpose of this show? Not only that, but rather than the straightforward direction of build-up to climax, OPM delivers an alternative. The purpose of this episode was to express how, danger is relative to strength, and that honor is derived through putting yourself in danger. This is evident through the use of Saitama's speech. While a member of the crowd was calling the heroes useless, Saitama decides to discredit himself to give credit to the fallen. They wanted to assert the idea that Saitama feels he gave less than the other heroes simply because he wasn't in any real danger.
If a billionaire gave you $1000, that's barely worth anything to them. If I gave you $1000, that'd be a true gesture of generosity.
It's pretty black and white. I mean, they even drill it in your head further with King's story.
Exactly, Anonymous 19:29. The whole purpose of 'heroics' is that you do what is right even if it does put you into danger and the biggest heroes are the people who do that knowing they might not come out of it alive.
"the earth is in danger!!" by prophet old lady
*** MANGA SPOILERS ***
Later on, he doesn't always win with one punch. It's fucked up, but trust me on this.
He has been known to hold back his punches.
It's like Mad Max. Saitama isn't the big main character.
More like Godzilla. Everyone else is trying to stop the big bad enemy Kaiju, but we all know Godzilla is going to finish em.
this is the smartest comparison i have seen all day
like it's rare for the hero to win the day after everything's said and done
It's more like a parody.
I wonder how Sonic and Snek survived Saitama's punches intact while the monsters turned into dead shish kebab.
He was holding back
He clear the rainclouds with the shockwave.
he can control the strength of the punches to a degree. he can use nonlethal punches on people like snek and sonic, and he's got his normal punches for people like the Sea King.
he's got a serious series of moves that'll show up in 3-4 episodes, but even that's him holding back. going all out, he could probably punch out the moon or even the earth if he really wanted to. he just doesn't have an upwards cap of how strong he can punch (much to his dismay)
So basically hes the bald non alien anime version of superman. no wonder people are constantly comparing them nowadays
That's an incorrect comparison because, by definition, Saitama could beat Superman with ... one punch.
ha no, superman could be called one-punch man too, but he's bound by the rules of his universe and he has to hold back or he'll destroy the world. (And of course PIS)
again no he couldn't.
come back when his punches can bust planets then we'll talk.
Well, he will protect the planet from something that can destroy planets, so does that count?
part of his life motivation is to find someone that can 'assist' him in finding the cap limit
Finding someone who can actually present a challenge to him, more like.
Namely, someone who can take more than one of his full-powered punches and hurt him just as badly as he can hurt them.
he always held back. and yes, that includes against monsters.
