This is probably the front runner for "news that everyone assumed was a hoax." It doesn't make much sense. FF7 was pretty much THE killer app for the Playstation, so having Cloud in this celebration of Nintendo classics is even more ridiculous than Solid Snake was. Terra or Cecil would make more sense, and Crono would be amazing, but none of them are as popular, or are advertising on upcoming game, are they?
Slime or any Dragon Quest hero would make more sense, but this is more surprising. And Capcom has 2 characters soo why not both?
It makes total sense if you think about it. It's Nintendo taking FF back, or at least in spirit anyway, with the first main FF character not to appear on a Nintendo system.

Preposterous! FF7 was THE game that created a rift between Nintendo and Square after years of collaboration in exclusive. it was supposed to be for N64 and then Square "betrayed" Nintendo choosing the Playstation like a goldigger whore who foes only woth the rich and more powerful mate. And then THIS?
It's perfect though isn't it? It's like a little jab to Sony, like saying "see that character, Sony? he's back where he belongs now".
The funniest thing would be if they started porting over Final Fantasy games to Nintendo systems now, starting with the original PSX trilogy... FF7 would be perfect for the 3DS actually.
It wasn't final fantasy being released on PS1 that killed the relationship, but the disparaging remark made by then Squaresoft's then president. At which point Nintendo pulled their developer license and Squaresoft had no choice but to latch onto Sony, in hopes of surviving without Nintendo. Squaresoft tried killing their ass for years, hoping to at least release games on the Gameboy handhelds before Nintendo finally let them develop games on their platforms.
