I can't believe people have already fogotten Nikumi...
Nobody can forget Nikumi, but I would not consider her 'cute,' Nikumi is most definitely a sensual character, and cuteness is a different feeling than sensuality. Some of these characters have sensuality, but their cuteness overshadows the sensual moments. For example short-haired Nami is often sexy, but in a cute way. Modern Nami is definitely more sensual than cute, and I prefer short-haired Nami myself because she had a balance of any sexiness being inherent in her actions, not her design. She is such a beloved female character because she was riding a perfect line of being able to go sexy or cute with a shift in her style, and it was driven by her character rather than forcing poses in drawings for example.
She is a pretty sexy character until her masquerade falls and she become the cute girl she was denied to be.
No Senjougahara, but Hanakawa is #6 ?

Lol, no troll. Every single character in and of themselves was a total vapid waste of ink. This doesn't even take into account that the series was immensely boring and had no plot to speak of. Ritsu was the only one that actually had a reasonably believable personality and wasn't a one-liner onto themselves.

In most of the newer series? Ever since Tsubasa Neko story, which may have occurred during the OVA Nekomonogatari (White). She appears with short hair during Karen Bee which is the beginning of season 2.

It looks terrible actually. Long haired black Hanekawa for the win. Sort of stupid too because it was awesome how the cat was able to control her hair and move it into beautiful flowingness in many shots.
Isin in general seems to have a hair-cutting fetish (see also: Katanagatari, Medaka Box), and I can't say I approve since it's usually done rather pointlessly and, at least IMO, the characters don't look anywhere near as nice as they did back when they had long hair (then again, I personally hate hair-shortening in general, but I am willing to make some exceptions to characters whom I think still manage to look at least slightly as good as they did before; ex. Azusa Miura from Idol Master).
In Hanekawa's case.... yeah, her braids were a tragic loss, but compared to the other Monogatari girls, I'd say she at least came out far better than Karen and Hitagi did (can't really say much on Tsukihi; her onscreen presence before she gets her hair cut is almost non-existent). This applies all the more-so starting in Monogatari Season 2, when she loses the glasses, and then later white hair streaks, essentially giving her appearance a new slate altogether (I unfortunately can't say the same about short-haired Black Hanekawa, though). Having what seem to be the largest tits in the series probably helped with this transition.
