The recently arrived Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water has (somewhat unexpectedly) been subjected to an excessive abundance of censorship, after many believed the skimpy DLC costumes would be the only victims – unfortunately, according to Nintendo, the mere sight of a girl in a bikini is all too hazardous to the M-rated game’s impressionable western audience…

Well here is the rub in the U.S. it would still be a dodgy issue to have "underaged girls" meaning less than 18 years old being "sexed up" so Sony would run into the same issue. I remember when DOA for came out some of the characters had to be aged up.

OK guys, let's understand something very carefully: the censorship laws in America is actually LESS strict compared to the EU, because as we all know, the EU (yeah, that's right, all of them European countries) actually censors more crap than the US, and in actuality, there's more sexualism in American shows than in European shows. TRUTH. An outside example is if you've ever watched something violent that is an American show, there'd actually be some censorship to that same show if it airs in Europe. (bad example: try the WWE... yeah, wrestling. it's actually more censored according to European friends I know.)
Bikini costumes and a photo shoot would not have any issues in either US or the EU. This is purely self-censoring on Nintendo's part.
Spaniard here. I can tell you we had enough censorship with Franco for millenia to come. Our laws are truly lax with violence, improper language and sex in the media. Basically the censorship is for the timeslot it can be aired (on TV) or recommended age (for sale purposes), anything else is always selfcensoring from the creator or distribution company.

As per censorship - let the buyers decide! Put a parental lock or something and have them switch "modes". I'm sure they'll toggle them to "unsafe" if they're sure the kiddies are all in their sacks!

I remember old PC games sold with a physical key to unlock the uncensored versions during play. They could do something similar if they really wanted.
That way the game the parents pirate for their kids would be censored and people who buy it and want to, could uncensor them.
