The recent “Hakurei Shrine Autumn Reitaisai 2” event has caused hordes of Touhou fans to gather at Tokyo Big Sight, with attendees engaging in some extraordinary cosplay and demonstrating the eternal passion that many hold for the esteemed franchise.
Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai is the largest Touhou-only doujin convention (Comiket not having quite abandoned other franchises yet), even though it is not officially associated with Team Shanghai Alice; despite that, it has still managed to accumulate a great deal of popularity over the years, as evidenced by the quality of cosplay on show.

if some of these are ugly, most of you must not have ever been to a western cosplay convention.
Just because there are extremely ugly people at western cons doesn't mean some of these people aren't ugly.
I guess this is no worse than the "trekkies" in the west. Although some of these are at least mildly attractive. I have yet to see a mildly attractive trekkie though.
I guess cosplay is new to you. Seems really odd to compare this particular event to a gathering of Trekkies, as though that's the closest thing you have to compare it to. Or do you just hate cosplay in general?

That's funny... I found all cosplays quite interesting, pretty, and well done. ^^
Perhaps I'm a bit narrow minded, but I think the fact that a person can make a very nice cosplay is much more important than the actual beauty of this person. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but this is just what I think.

The majorities of celebrity in the states certainly fits in the "ugly" category by your logic. Almost anyone will look "bad" outdoors as opposed to indoors, that's why celebrities always look gorgeous when they are being photographed or filmed indoors, not to mention the thick makeups they wore.
