The newly aired Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry has seemingly started off with a strong charge into a brief bout of service followed by some intense battle scenes, coming under scrutiny by some viewers due to its peculiar similarity to Gakusen Toshi Asterisk – all sure to further fuel anime fans with doubts over the current standards of the anime industry…

Not the anime industry's fault that so many shitters still spend money on mediocre LN adaptations. Stop supporting this drivel with money so they start doing something new.
like the great warrior general, tsun su, once said, "iffu it ainto broke, donto fix itto"
I think Tsun Su also said "Pff, it's not my fault you don't win!"
Most of you just torrent anime anyway; you don't have any say on what an animation company does.
wait, you pay for anime?
Considering the studio staff are usually underpaid, I think it's only right we start paying. :V
Unless, doing so actually supporting underpayment.
I don't know.
Not that they are underpaid but rather it is a case by case basis since most of the studio's staff did it as a hobby (and not full-time job). And the intakes is based on the amount of sponsors for each individual title each Anime studio(s) can get, paying the staff fixed wages is impractical since they don't always get to animate high-end projects. But either ways, the Anime industry is still a business, they earn profit from the sales of their discs.
also not their fault that the source materials are similar.
Mahouka x that anime with the devil sister
I think Japan needs to introduce some sort of national examination for light novel authors, because this is getting ri-goddamn-diculous... It´s like the Japanese are so pressured to excel in school that the moment they get out and start writing stories they just give up and write the worst shit immaginable in some kind of covert social protest...
And who would grade them? Murakami? Or Nisioisin? He's the most awarded japanese author in this century!
Japan is a capitalist country, they already have a test called sale figures. If you don't like the results, start grading with them nippons!
Feels like I have already seen this anime.
Holy fuck. This season is full of generic harem bullsihit with male MC bullshit. The ones that're literally worth-watching are Gochiusa, YrYr, and Valkyrie Drive.
Yeah this whole season sucks, so lets keep watching moeblob fanservice animes and ignore good shows like one punch man.
And VD is surprisingly promising.
Rakudai not is harem. :(
Well, if One Punch Man is even 1/10th as good as the manga, the other studios should know they stand no chance this season, so doing anything good would just be a waste of time...
Another bullshit of season.
The manga has more scenes than this shit...
Its time for me to have an anime hiatus this season because of too much generic bullshit with generic male mc bullshit. Feel free to down-vote down-voters.
If this was 100% generic harem bs (which this isnt harem to begin with), the MC would have lost the fight and would be her slave forever and whatnot.
So at least it's got that going for it, as small as that may be.
You do know harem doesn't mean submissive MC, look at the Gary Stu trend for example.
Doesn't mean they aren't generic and overused as all hell though.
Harem needs more than one romantic interest and I can assure you Ikki's not gonna play into that...
This anime doesn't have a harem u idiots. COME ON!
Asterisk is a stupid harem; Rakudai is DEFINITELY NOT a harem !!
stay shit hatemshit
I've been waiting for this!
I thought I was watching Asterisk War again.
This anime can be cool. I'll be whach it
Later Episodes should be interesting. I read the manga, this may look generic but it is anything but that.
Worth it.
i read the manga. i thought the same but after reading the available chapters, i found that it was very generic. MC is a merry sue. all villains are asshole males. the only other male is a transgender (the only interesting part to be honest). also, the redhead MC is annoying and generic as well.
lol, both of the girl is princess too..
(rakudai and arterisk)
the haremshitters are ready for another rehash of Familiar of Violent Tsundere
I don't remember many Violent Tsunderes french kissing their Familiar around the middle of the first season...
She has some sexy underwear.
Read the manga: is not a harem, but the rest is a total generic romance shonen.
Don't need to, lightnovel illustrations say it's haremshit. Princess, imouto, megami, loli, sensei, etc, all I see are bitches everywhere and not a single male friend in sight. HAREMSHIT.
Pretty sure you didn't even look, since male friend (imouto's roommate) appear in the second chapter, maybe third if talking only about illustrations...
That roommate who is a identify as a woman trapped in a man's body
The roommate pretty much boils down to this...
Exists to quell issues with lack of other males of decent caliber without ruining the escapist fantasy of picturing yourself as the MC, Ikki, getting all the girls in the entire show.
They were practically the same anime. Show starts with guy coming to campus and walks into a room where a girl is undressing. They girl attacks him and they ending up dueling each other because in both anime they are in some "combat school". It also so happens the both girls are ranked #1, have some sort of flame element about their powers, and our princess from some country. Both guys upset the girl with some sword skill and they end up rooming together.
Since when is the MC roommate with the female in Gakusen?
Julis is not rank #1 (that's Kirin), she's #5 and she's not MC's roommate. And Stella is only #1 amongst the newbies, not overall (Touka kaichou)
Just Asterisk? They are both basically a copy of Absolute Duo...
lmao...wtf is the Absolute Duo?its not even famous
Talking about copies, there are probably at least a dozen of em
Uncensored, thank you. It will be better without the guy
Its good compared to Absolute Duo at least, well if you rely to the manga theres even some nice twist to it
So you know, despite it being a few chapters now, the art and story is way better than the anime and its still far behind.
All these shit shows are the same, and have been for years. How do you not even notice it's the exact same thing recycled year after year? Same for the giant robot stuff. I guess it's just too jarring when it's two in the same season.
Yeah I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed most of these shows are the same, or if you people didn't care anymore...I do like his attitude about things tho.
Can you read minds? How do you know people didn't notice the repetitiveness? Some stories that are tied to categories like Shounen or Shoujo (in Japan, they aren't regarded as genres) are written in quite similar fashion because they are just following the framework. You can't really write anything too far-fetched when the intended target audiences is older kids to teenagers.
Unless the shows is based on Seinen or Josei stories which is intended for young adults and above, but it still doesn't justify what you had said. When a stories from a source is adapted into Anime, they need someone to write the storyboard, if we get a talented writer then the story would probably be good but the director also plays a key role. If your budget is low then the chances of hiring veteran director and animation staff is almost nil...
Notice that in our modern society, almost everything is about trends? Do you think you can recommend a show that dates back a couple years ago to a friend who is new to anime? While the first few older Anime for newcomers is usually well-tolerated but they will gradually yearn for trendier series, can you still recommend those older mecha Anime?
P.S: I'm aware not everyone is trying their best to keep up with the trends, my above statement is meant for people in general.
You're just trying to defend people who aren't even trying to put efforts into being "unique".
"Genres" have frameworks, sure, but that doesn't mean they can't try anything "new". Heck "scifi" is a genre, and basically the possibilities is endless.
Shounen and shoujo is the same, adventure stories, sports stories, romance stories, slice of life stories, card game stories, mystery stories, cooking stories, mecha stories, heck even stories based on real life occupations(Bakuman) can be shounen, so no, being a shounen doesn't limit you from doing anything.
Yes, not even restraints when it comes to complexity or gore and nudity, Death Note, Mirai Nikki and many others have stories much more complex and maybe even gruesome than most self proclaimed "seinens" such as NEEDLESS or SAO. The word doesn't mean shit anymore apart from what magazine the thing is being published in.
And you are aware that these are "adaptations", which means they are taken from some other source materials, so it matters very little what director or screenwriter the studio hires, because the source material is already very generic to begin with.
And budget also doesn't change anything, any given 24 minutes anime needs roughly the same amount of animators, which means it's no excuse to make those talented artist who already live on minimum wage work on shitty projects when they could be using their efforts to draw for a better story.
Also you talk like "following trends" is a sacred rule, well heads up but it's not, even without a critical standpoint, harem animes have been oversaturating the market with 3-4 harem titles coming out EVERY SEASONS, that's 12+ harem animes a year, and hardly any of them manages to ever bring anything new to the table.
A good story, regardless of whether portrayed in anime, manga, LN, movie, game or any other media, is one that is unique and impactful on it's own, not some lazy ripoffs by bottom tier writers who can't write shit apart from their own fap material imaginations.
tl;dr version: we need innovation.
Needles or SAO "seinen"? Not even their authors say that.
Death Note or Mirai Nikki complex stories? That's like saying Battle Royale copied the Hunger Games
And Bakuman is a freaking battle manga with tons of traning arcs, for gods sake! There is nothing new in that!
You speak as if you have published stories on books before. To audiences new to Anime or Manga, almost anything can be seen as "unique" since they weren't constantly exposed to them like most old-time fans did. If anything, I'd say the audiences had became too picky about small details and is fast to point them out as "flaws", long gone is the days when appreciation is shown like back in the early 90's to the early 2000's. I can only think of social medias as the root cause of this behaviors.
I'm aware there sub-genres for Shounen and Shoujo, however, they are still limited to their framework. With Shounen - growing stronger (not necessary physical abilities) friendship bonds and strong motivation.
Romance in Shounen is usually very subtle, all you'd get is some hints of them thus romance genre is seldom seen on Shounen titles.
For Shoujo - getting stronger (emotionally and courageous) friendship bonds and romance as it's key.
While it is true there were plenty of sub-genres to work with but how many of the shows you had cited actually did well in Japan and overseas is the issue. Not many people enjoy Slice of Life series like Bakuman due to the slower pacing, people has accused creator of sports Anime/Manga of using Bishounen or fan services (for females) to lure in viewers, how many sports series has make it big to this day, I think our fingers is enough to count them all.
Although I'm a male but I don't dislike romance stories, but as far as I'm concerned, not many male audiences can tolerate it. Card game and cooking stories is very rare which is why over the decades, we only saw one or two such series surfaced. Mecha, mystery and adventure is pretty mainstream which is why they feels overused.
Dark series doesn't quite sits well with younger audiences, especially Death Note which were banned right after the final episode aired in Japan. Mirai Nikki is almost as dark as Elfen Lied (2004) however, the latter is a Seinen and both isn't that well-received. Being much more complex and gruesome doesn't really pull in the crowds, sadly. And Seinen and Josei is for older readers thus they never appeared in the same magazine with Shounen or Shoujo.
Have you ever seen cases of Anime being better than it's source? This can be attributed to the talents of screenwriter or the director, I can argue that everything outside of Anime and Manga are practically very generic in nature everywhere you look, nowadays it is all about presentations.
Almost everyone associated with Anime studios is either fans themselves or simply just doing the job as a form of hobby, I don't think they can survive with that little wages, and I also don't think they are working full-time on the job because the staff members displayed during the ending credit is ever-changing. This gave me the idea that most of them are part-timer or freelancer.
And each Anime project has a deadline since most of the series is announced before their release date, as such, studio undertaking the project will need to draw up a schedule. If your budget is high, you can hire veteran artists since they will decline other job of lesser significant and focus on the project, sometimes you will notice a handful of badly drawn scenes and that is probably done by amateurish hands, budget does indeed matters.
I admit there are many harem centered stories this past few years but those are meant for fans of said genre. You do know that not all Anime/Manga or games from Japan has make it to the west, no? Sadly, what you see on the table is handpicked to ensure the profits of Anime companies in the U.S, you'd think they would import titles that won't sell to the west?
While it is true a good story, regardless of the media used is unique but movies require much more budget than Anime in general, and we don't see 3-4 movies being released every seasons by the same company.
And it is the writers' right of expression. Plus, there are female writers as well. Why do you think novels is a hit in Japan, it provided everyone a chance to write stories, it is a form of freedom since the law can't really touch you if you don't cross the line. There are good stories as well as mediocre ones, not every author is experienced, but is still bashed and compared with veteran author's work even if he/she is just debuting.
Look it up on either the Japanese or English wiki, both NEEDLESS and SAO are categorized as Seinen.
And I hope you're trolling when saying Bakuman is a battle manga, or that Death Note and Mirai Nikki aren't "innovative" at the very least. If you're trying to troll, please try to do something that will make yourself seem less of a retard.
Also if you think the point of my arguments is "who copies who", then you're completely missing the point, the point isn't that copycats exist, it's that the industry had delved into feeding off unoriginality.
@11:15
I'm not sure which comment gave you the idea that Bakuman is a battle Manga, maybe you posted on the wrong thread or misread it. But who started the mentalities of automatically comparing any latest series with the most successful series of the same genre(s) really baffles me, I don't recall such behavior being so rampage before the era of social medias. Not sure if you were the one who cited "unique" for every works regardless of media, if so, then why do people not view each series as it's own but chose to scrutinize them by using other well-received series as a "framework"?
