I love this show but what I never understood was how nice Japan was to the land beyond the gate. I mean if it had appeared in America we would have invaded taken over the area completely and made it a colony. The dragon would have been awoken. The fact they had the tech of the middle ages wouldn't have mattered. Japan ... people from the other side of the gate come through and they are welcomed with cheering crowds and the Japanese army is berated for letting to many of them die ... I mean what the hell??
Now this site USED to cover like Japanese politics and such some but not any more it seems. For those that don't know Japan is trying to become more militaristic by reinterpreting its constitution. This has led to protests by a large section of Japan. What do people think this will do to the popularity of this anime? I myself can't wait for a second season!
You can just read the manga is you want all the rape and gore.
Better read the novels, even less censored!

It's not so much naughty is that I wish that they would have added in extra content expanding on the brutality of the Empire and the other world about how slaughter, rape, torture, and extortion like they did in the manga. Also they got some of the costumes wrong for the people of the other world. Their clothes have little European influence of the middle ages and more resemble pre-middle ages during the roman empire and the countries that surrounded the roman empire.
And is it just me or did they seriously downplay Kuribayashi's tits in the anime? In the manga, she is insanely busty, and in the anime, they hardly ever focused on them.
From what I've heard, the anime was based more on the novel than the manga. I don't believe Kuribayashi was described as being as busty and muscular in the novel compared to how she is in the manga.
In manga Kuribayashi has boobs of steel. In anime she is cutie bruiser. I like manga characters better. It looks like characters were simplified for the anime for easier and faster drawing.
Easier and faster drawing? They need to hire artist for the Character Design for each individual title. You may call it the taste of the artist in charge but never easier to draw either ways. There are cases where the Manga has inferior art works but became beautified after Character Design, for example - Suzumiya Haruhi.
While there is also the opposite, great art works on Manga but ruined by amateur character Design. However, to blame them all on the artists is too harsh since production budget also plays a part.
Hope the fix some of the quality issues, especially in the Apocalypse Now episode. there were some weird musical and SFX direction in there.
