Dragon Ball Super‘s latest episode has at last seen to Goku and Lord Beerus squaring off, leading to a fight scene that has made some viewers rather skeptical of Toei’s animation quality – something that has been seen more frequently than not with their more recent works.

it looks to me they took the best deviantart has to offer and said "have at it". probably working at less than minimum wage too.
Maybe the average deviantart user, aka a beginner. Certainly not the best the site has to offer
No, Toei always have the lowest quality animation since the 90s.
That's incredibly insulting, you owe an apology to all the deviantartists out there! Not even they would do this bad...
you obviously don't know that community very well.
I'm sure 18:38 meant so say "the best of dA's FRONTPAGE artists", y'know, the page that's constantly covered in shitty furry drawings made in MSPaint.
Holy shit, at first glance this seemed like some kind of joke article, but this is actually happening? What the shit were they thinking? The stuff from the 90s may look antique by today's standards, but even that was better animated and featured a broader range of colours than this.
It genuinly looks like some kind of animation of a kid's colouring book. This is just too bizarre...
No it wasnt, it just wasnt picked apart like ass holes do today. A lot of those are very specific image grabs that last a second or less and are just animations in between. You would never notice it when in motion.
hey, i noticed it. there is no reason for Toei to have such a bad quality animation in an important scene. it's worse than the original.
*cough*SailorMoonhadbadanimation*cough*
so, Kubo drew the backgrounds?
Yup, he struggled greatly to get that exact shade of pink for the fight scenes.
I'm so scared for digimon tri.
Why Toei!? They were such a great studio. I'm also scared for Tri...
*sighs* They had great titles, doesn't mean they had ufotable great work. I think because people have watch so many different Anime from different companies that you realize Toei's Animation is actually really really bad.
It's more like a "Shame on you (Toei), but Shame on me for not really noticing"
Because ****, I can ****ing critique Anime and Japan should listen to what I say, right? and the answer is always...No. lol
they have too many series going on, which we can presume that they lack veteran animator, or they are actually cutting it close on time so they rushed the art resulting in bad picture.
there's also a chance that they are trying a new style and are not used to it for making combat scenes hence producing weird arts.
hey at least they did good with one piece and still no fail on that part.
I will still complain on some part in world trigger tho, lack of animation and tons of still picture because of conversation scenes all over the stories, yet they still cant produce good pic for those still images.
maybe they really lacked veteran animators
Why even bother reviving one of the most popular anime shows of all time and then cut the budget 5 episodes in?
Because they are tied to Bandai and it makes people buy 100$+ merch only because of nostalgia (just look at how fast all the Sailor Moon Crystal shit sells).
You just realizing sempai, but I've been cutting budgets since 1999 desuuuuuuuuu. lol
Must have been animated by the shitty part of TOEI Philippines.
Studio A-1 are also guilty of cost cutting on battle scenes lately too with Fairy Tail. The Wendy vs Ezel fight had plenty of still images and minimal animation.
After Sailor Moon Crystal, did anyone expect anything less than a disaster?
They fixed everything in the DVD/Bluerays tho but Toei is known for outsourcing to Korea these days as they hardly make money anymore besides with eternal series of Nostalgia which is the actual reson why they make reboots, even if the quality is shitty the former 90s kids will throw money at them for ruining childhood series.
So I watched the episode in question then saw this article and then I re-watched the episode.
I'm not seeing any this bad artwork, is this article a joke?
I suggest getting your freaking eyes checked then. pronto.
wow, you can really tell the difference
holy shit, that looks like some fan creation.
You know, the show does not look like this. These are very specific screen grabs that last a second or less. When watching animated you dont notice at all. The scenes that matter have been well done and are at the very lest to the quality of the old show when it was don well, often better.
Go back to the old show and look at every single freaking frame like these obsessives are doing today. You will see some shite animation.
hipster fashion has made it's way to DGB, because that white haired guy is a hipster right? just look at that hair!
Reminds me of how bad some of the art was in Z during the Gotenks vs Super Buu episodes
This reminds me of the terrible job Studio Pierrot did for the animation on Legend of Korra.
It's really sad to see that a lot of old 90's anime have better animation quality than new anime :/
Hey TOEI why you dont make a anime of SLENDERMAN XDXDXD
It looks no different then the shitty art from gurren lagan
>redo fight already shown in the movie
>with worse animation
It's like eating filet mignon and then eating a turd that's shaped like filet mignon.
just like sailormoon crystal, i guess this is probably one of the work of their other company in toei philippines
They do it this way so they can release Dragon Ball Super Kai later down the road.
They do it these way, so they can release Dragon Ball Super Kai down the road, and say its a superb version.
Whoever defends this is stupid. They ruined One Pice now they are fuckin up Dragon Ball, Toei sucks big time.
I think the person who wrote this article is over analyzing it, of course you'll find flaws if you pause it and watch frame by frame! But doing that you will find flaws in just any animated show as well. Just watch DBS and you will see that it actually looks very good, moves quite smoothly and the character designs looks constant in all episodes so far.
That was a little depressing. I remember flash animations from about 2004 that looked better and maintained art quality better than that.
If the first real fight of the show is that poor I wonder where they spent all the budget.
Never watched a single episode of Dragon Ball...
I'm confident I'm not missing out on anything.
this is Super Crappy Art Level 4: Garbage-jin

They really should be ashamed of that. Not much in the way of framerate or animation.
We should really look at all their works, because Sailor Moon (1990/1992), Dragon Ball etc., Digimon, Slam Dunk, and omg just look at Fist of the North Star (that was in the 80s when people didn't give a damn)
Toei never got better, it's mostly because we're aware of quality now from certain studios
It's not a matter of getting better, it's a matter of maintaining standards. Unfortunately you kind of need money to do that, and from what I've heard the budget for this series is a bit tight. I'd say their animation production values have actually regressed quite a bit since those older movies and series.
You're right that they're not great but they could have at least made the effort with that. Any half decent artist could draw something better in a short space of time. You'd expect more from an anime being made for $$$$.
I was legit waiting for this post. How the fuck did they get away with this? This quality of animation is completely laughable. im glad i dropped this series after episode 2.
The wonders of outsourcing, my friends!
Back in 1996, Dragonball Z was real anime with Japanese people animating every single cel. Now Toei is too cheap to employ their own people. This particular episode was outsourced to the Philippines.
It's shocking to me how some people didn't realize this a long time ago. Even as far back as the Battle of the Gods movie you could already tell that the production values had tanked in comparison to some of the original DBZ movies or even some of the better fight scenes from the series.
I told everyone I know this would suck - back because Toei has no money left - when they announced it. Now they finally believe me *g*
Expect something like this for Digimon tri, too. Or maybe those will be decent, because obviously they spared expenses for Sailor Moon Crystal and Dragon Ball Super.
Most battle scenes in Tri will be CGI made to look 2D.
They have money, they just choose not to throw it at this series clearly. Dragon Ball is a license to print money and selling it to the various overseas markets will bring them in millions.
They also made $58 million off that Freeza movie.

No offense here but kindly do some research before saying things without any basis. I'm not sure whether this link works here but please check out this site if you haven't heard of it.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php
There are plenty of news regarding Anime & Manga on this site, just navigate by choosing a alphabet of the series you desire.
Anime studios do not invest money on production of animation on their own, rather they start work after getting enough sponsors for a specified title. And the license to the contents will expires after some years, companies oversea do not own the rights permanently.
Toei isn't only an anime studio (Toei Animation). They're a production company, too. (Toei Company) Unlike other studios, Toei actually pays for the animation themselves.
Every individual piece of work has their own sponsor(s), it's not wise to compare all Anime projects as a whole. Although budgets is the main culprit for bad animation quality but lack of experienced artists for the key animation and character design is also an factor.
And what do you expect when people are quick to spread negative comments whenever a new Anime is released, can't really blame the studio for cutting cost, can we?
Sometimes criticism can bring about change. It worked for Gurren Lagann. One bad episode, and a director talking shit and things were changed when the Japanese fans vented.
I agreed that criticism can be good provided they were constructive and make known to the authors, studios or sites where Japanese fans communicates. But I'm talking about biased personal rants being spread mindlessly by haters which is the problem with many websites associated with Manga/Anime.
It's a matter of how you choose to convey a message politely even if you dislike something...but the majorities of this generation's youngsters doesn't give a hoot, they just post sh*t for the sake of posting.
