I know somebody I went to high school with (7 years ago) that named her 2 kids "Akira" and "Alucard".

(We both live in Illinois, not Japan.)

    17:25 22/07/2015 # ! Neutral (0)

To be fair, Alucard isn't a Japanese name. Granted it's still strange, but it would be no less strange even if you lived in Japan.

I'm kind of on the fence about Akira. If you pronounce it incorrectly, i.e. ah-KEE-rah, it makes a pretty sounding girl's name in my opinion, regardless of country.

Sakura has always been a very popular name in Japan for generations.

However i think someone has been inflating SAO numbers on poll for the sheer trolling effect. I do not believe it has nearly as many fans as it says it does.

While naming you kid after a Japanese word that you have no idea what is means is bad. Giving him/her a japanese, or other cultural name is NOT guaranteed to doom their social life. There are actually many japanese names and words that have been added/accepted into the english language in general. a good example of commonly used 'english'/(american) names with japanese origins or equivalents: Naomi, Amy/Ami, Mika, Midori, Kaya, Karin, Hana, Erina, Miya, Mia, Mai, Maya, Rena, Rina, Saya, Emi, Jin, Kin/Ken, Rei/Ray, Yuri, Tsuki/Suki, Kane, Kei, Kobe/Kobey/Kobi, Kaede, Jakobe/Jakobi, Tomi/Tomy/Tommy, and Risa just to name a few that can/do have a japanese origin or equivalent name and meaning. As long as you do NOT make it a main point and public information the the kid is specifically named after a animation character, there would be NO PROBLEM. Really its up to Good/bad parenting and where you actually live globally.

A great way to destroy your child's life...
If you live in Japan maybe some of those names would be acceptable. If you're anywhere else it's a really bad idea to give your kid one of those names.

He'll have to live his entire life with that name.
At school other kids will make fun of him, his social skills will suffer.
And good luck going through highschool when you're named after some anime character...

By the time your kid will be able to legally change his name his social skills would be really bad.

So yeah, don't be a retard and don't even think that's funny to name your kid after some anime character. Especially if you live outside of Asia.
