The first episode of the mysterious MMORPG anime Overlord has proven somewhat boring to some viewers as it attempts to deliver an overly familiar storyline common to MMORPG-themed anime (albeit with a more realistic approach) – still likely to be greatly overshadowed by the similar Sword Art Online, though perhaps not in the service department.

It's not bad. The whole POINT of the first ep is that HE is sad and bored. His fave game is ending, his buds are quit, and he's saying goodbye to seven years of work, friendship, and memories. They just don't end. The rest is just the beginning.
In novel form, maybe, you bought the book, your expectations are that things will improve and at least you should feel obligated to read more than just the first chapter since you already paid for the thing.
But in anime form, not really, if you can't grab the audiences' attention within this 20 minutes you've been given, no one's going to blame them not to continue.

I've come to a conclusion that anyone who hates Sword Art that much honestly just has a friend who wouldn't shut up about it and their entire experience of it was peppered by that. Because there's honestly nothing in the show that was actually 'bad.' Maybe not the greatest thing in the world, but objectively, it was solid as a concept and as a show regardless of its faults. Even if you dislike the characters for whatever reason, there was nothing particularly wrong with their character setup either.

how can you even mention Sword Art Online when talking about OVERLORD? what the hell is wrong with you? they don't even go in the same damn category, Overlord is more like different world than game trapped.

Kiritos power level seems to fluctuate. One moment he's overpowered and pretty much untouchable, the next he's taking damage and on the verge of losing.
Aids chan in the light novels pretty much kicked Kiritos ass in the one in one duel in ALO, it wasn't even close(The anime exaggerated a little to make Kirito seem better) but even he acknowledged she was better than him.
That she had a higher reaction speed than him; no idea how that got adapted to higher power level. Also, much of his power comes from the unexpected element of dual wielding that people don't know how to defend against, and he tries not to use that if possible; do note he didn't use it against her.
But yes, I can see how the variable power level can annoy people.
The fluctuating power makes sense to me. Kirito's out of practice by ALO and using inferior hardware compared to Aids-chan (lol). He also typically builds as a melee glass cannon to further leverage his style of surprise tactics like the aforementioned dual-wielding.
Anyone familiar with RPG's knows that glass cannon builds are either rofl-stomping or getting stomped. Its just the nature of the beast.

It was basically because Aids chan spent 24/7 playing the game because of her illness, thus Kirito couldn't compete with someone of that level.

If setting the ground work for the rest of the show is boring well then it must be awfully hard to please ya with any kind of story.
I for one like the way this one is taking appose to the "O no we are trapped and someone is killing everybody" that SwordArt just repeats (don't hate it but it gets dull) or Logs "Well we are here lets make best of it"

Actually, if you watch Season 2, there are a large group of people who actually intentionally die/kill themselves ingame because they want to return to the real world and believe the moon area is the only way.
O im well aware, its one of my favorite series. I was mostly just generalizing it to keep it short.
Still, a lot of people, including Shiroe are only making the most of it until they find a clue that they can follow up on to return to the real world(Like what they did at the end of Season 2 for example).
There's no sense getting into a panic if you're trapped in a game. Especially when there's no viable means of escape and you have absolutely no information as to how you're there to begin with.

Oh I thought you meant this was an MMORPG adapted into an anime which are all invariably terrible.
Funimation messed up with their episode 1 release. I think anyone who has watched the Horriblesubs release/Funi stream will see that the episode is incredibly choppy when the camera is panning, the framerate goes to shit. This isn't in the RAWs btw.
Yes, Funi's poor encoding makes the show unwatchable.

Overlord is nothing like Sword Art of Log Horizon. He isn't stuck in a game. He is in another world it's no where near the same.
Just give it a couple of episodes to introduce the characters and setting because after that the series takes off. I'm personally looking forward to it's anime adaption!

Believe me, even you won't be giving the anime a chance with the 3-ep rule if all the 1st ep shows is a skeleton guy trying to paint all the walls of his castle.

Japanese should leave their stupid prejudices, animate 1/2 Prince and watch it crush the competition. Nobody will be talking about SAO anymore if they animate 1/2 Prince.
A lot of SAO's appeal is the world building and the overt meta. If you're an RPG gamer/technophile/anime hobbyist its very likely to appeal to you. If you're missing one of those its very likely to appear over-hyped.
The synopsis of halfprince sounds similar to .hack to me.
