The original manga/doujin was written 10 years ago by an independent author who happens to be an ex-JSDF soldier. So that's where that side of it comes from, but it's got no official ties or funding. It was simply a popular manga that got put forward for adaptation, like any other.

(From reading the manga) Curiously you can actually note how the way the JSDF fumbles around how to conduct and organise themselves in the new world, reflects their purpose in reality. As a purely defensive military force, they don't have a proper policy on occupying foreign territory. Most others would target, isolate and control any points of political or military influence without delay. THEN they'd start negotiating.
The first episode was a good amount of nothing. I think the PV had more content. Also not much animation.
What really disturbs me about this series is not the patriotism, patriotism in japanese anime is no different from patriotism in american anime. What really disturbs me is why bother with all the "modern warfare > magic" if later you put a magic god loli that can obliterate entire units.
