You know in addition to being a brooding killing machine, except she wasn't exactly brooding, she actually cared about other people, and I'm not talking about the fan-service scene, a sense of humor, and could react a situation in ways other than brooding or killing.
Not a bit fan of the Arise artwork, but she at least looks female; so better than Oshii.
And she's also missing the Oshii lobotomy; so still better.
Brooding and killing does not make for any deeper personality than the typical moe-blob.
If all you saw was brooding then you were missing the forest for the trees (or a tree). It's an adaptation. A short one, at that. I see it as a new work inspired by the manga that manages to capture the general idea, atmosphere, and feel. It's its own separate piece of art and significant in the history of anime storytelling. I saw Oshii's Motoko showing much more than just brooding. There could have been more lighthearted banter between her and Batou, but it was there. You have your own perspective and that's fine but this is the way I saw it. I prefer the manga, the movie, and the TV series each for their own reasons.
