Surprising since I just recently read an article about a poll done on 4chan that showed that the "tomboy" type is actually the most popular type of anime girl, among both male and female viewers. I guess it's different for Japanese fans. They should poll 2ch.

5 boys and 5 girls, it seems. Given the "female" fan service the anime has from time to time, I think the manga is popular with the female audience too.

No reason to use quotations for "female", there's obviously something for those who like guys just as there is for those who like girls. That's a good thing, imo, and just another reason this series is so great. I wish more series could be as balanced...

Shokugeki no Soma manga is extremely popular and it'll get even more, after the anime, especially on the west.
It's get a season 2 purely on the basis of the manga being ridiculously popular. Bleach/Naruto/Fairy Tail/One Piece sell next to nothing on DVD/BD in Japan but get further seasons for their merch(Inc manga, figures etc) sales alone.

I'm assuming the poll mixes male and female votes, and usually in such cases the male votes are larger than female votes by like 7 to 1. If you have to blame a gender for Shinomiya being at the top it has to be the guys...
Bare in mind that this poll was done solely in Japan, clearly they know something we don't. Then again, the silent majority here in the west will probably vote Erina close to second too. The only difference is that Ikumi and Megumi might trade spots.

This ranking was released with the latest chapter. Nothing new here Soma and Erina have gotten 1st and 2nd respectively before. I say Megumi is 2nd with Nikumi as 3rd and Alice as 4th
