Click bait. Move along people.
sub > dub
Anyone who watches a lot of anime knows this simple truth. English dubs are generally terrible with a few rare exceptions.
its not that they are bad its that they are underfunded. lets face it a professional voice actor/actress will do a lot better then someone who also works in accounting like ADV use to do their VAs were from other jobs in the company most were likely like this as well. now there maybe a few full timers but number wise theres no way a hand full of full time English VAs can provide enough range for stuff not to sound crappy when you hear the same damn voices in almost every anime.
"its not that they are bad its that they are underfunded"
Ya, they're bad.
Off the top of my head, I think the dubs of Cowboy Bebop and possibly Fullmetal Alchenmist were the only decent ones.
Don't forget Rurouni Kenshin. Jin-Ei was good and Saito was brilliant. Sparky Thornton must have loved the role.
You are a bit wrong it's not just English dubs. Actually all the dubs on this planet, except Japanese dubs. Most of them are much worst than English dubs, their voice acting just painfully bad.
Yu-gi-oh! the Abridged Series was the best damn dubbed anime there ever was. And for the most part it was dubbed by one man. (he had help towards the end)
Dubs are usually bad, and Aniplex's business plan in America is ALWAYS BAD (unless Sentai is involved)
This is one of those anime which the dubbing will be very low-budget, guaranteed.
There's no way they'd put the same amount of effort into dubbing this as they did with Fate/Zero. I personally wouldn't have minded a Blast of Tempest dub (which is under their license) but that's because I'm too lazy to learn Japanese... and well, subtitles are for pussies. If you have to watch an anime using subtitles, then go read the f'ing manga.
What if it's an original series not based on a manga? Is it acceptable to read subtitles then?
The girl voices all sound too similar. The guys all come off as yuppie stoners.
Urgh. Sub FTW for sure in this case. Dub is totally and utterly awful.
the Asselyum Hime's voice looks like a woman of 60 years trying to talk like a girl of 6.
So here's the real question: How many of the people who are already classifying this dub as shitty would consider pretty much any English dub to be shitty? Because those are the opinions that aren't even worth the time it takes to read them.
On something like this I'd only place value on the opinions of those who are at least neutral to English dubs.
You tell'em. Only people who are at least agreeable with my position should ever be listened to.
Sigh.
As for me, I gave up hope in dubs when I first saw the lineup announced for Haruhi's dubs. I felt that I'd just seen all the voice actresses' names in a couple of other shows (and heard them as well, which was traumatizing). While I thought most dubs were awful, at that point I became convinced that they weren't even trying.
I ended up purchasing the DVDs (my first buy) after a while though because you can watch the show with Japanese audio to avoid earcancer but alas, the subs gave me eyecancer. I stopped buying anime for about four years after that until I saw a blu-ray which I bought on a whim. Since then I've bought a fair number of shows but if I was forced to buy dub-only discs, then I wouldn't buy another one.
But as such, I couldn't care less that some publisher wants to do a dub. While at one level, it makes it more expensive to release a disc, the prospective increase in sales makes it more likely that a show I'm interested in will be published and the increased sales volumes will likely have a greater good effect on the pricing than the negative effect that the dubs would have.
But my opinion of all of the dubs I've heard in shows from the last fifteen years or so is that they're uniformly awful and intended for a different audience than me.
No matter what you prefer, most people would agree that Crispin Freeman has a godly voice. Just cast him in every role and everyones happy.
All the this. Crispin Freeman is just such a stellar Voice Actor. God Tier
This dub isn't as bad as the ones produced by ADV Films(Now Section 23/Sentai Filmworks..) and Funimation. ADV Films dubs are generally terrible now and are low budget. Funimation likes to cast Todd Haberkon in every show, and Monica Rials shrill voice is irritating.
Is it too much to ask for them to speak like a normal person?
Sandy Fox aka the woman with the high pitched voice so high it'd rekt your ears is voicing someone in a normal voice, wtf? She's Asseylum. Also she was Mireille in .hack//twilight.
Ahh I read the trailer wrong lmfao
Who cares? It became a train wreck after the first half and Slaine was an insufferable faggot.
Unlike death note, code geass, or Baccano, it's hard to say if any other dubs have any good luck.
ew english
I always enjoy the irony of anime fans hating on English...in English.
Translation and script can be good, but voice acting is often very subpar, especially when compared to Japanese pros.
I actually find most Animax Dubs better than American Dubs... anyone else on that?
The irony in your statement is that normal japanese actors do not give the hammy performances their voice actors give.
@03:12
Aniplex IS Sony, which means they've gotta use union voice actors and not the scabs Funimation uses, so naturally their dubs should be better.
Watch Hyperdimension Neptunia anime in English, it'll make you cry as to how bad it is. They can't do cute/moe voices to save their lives.
It's not "often" – it's "always". While they can do ok sometimes with songs, dub is plain disgusting.
It's nothing strange. English is far from great/beautiful language that is used for international communication, nothing more. It does the job on conveying the meaning but totally unsuitable for details like cuteness/respect levels/e.t.c.
We have different ways of doing it compared to Japanese.
No thanks.
Wrong! Sandy will be Eddelrittuo. Erika Harlecker will be Asseylum.
nope.
Well, it doesn't sound bad, but I always wondered why we can't have Disney quality english when it comes to anime.
Someone teach me.
simple - licensors like funimation don't hire members of SAG aka union workers
It's very simple. Money. The US stable is payed a fraction of the seiyuu of Japan.
Not really. You can find plenty of low profile but quite talented seiyu in things like eroge that are paid a fraction of what dub actors receive. Paying more for dub won't make it any better.
oh great, another overpriced box set sold in 4 parts by the jew bastards at sony
Racist much?
go back to counting your shekels jew bastard
jew mad?
Anti-Jew does not equal Racism.
Hatred justified.
(Just like Anti-Christian)
(Don't worry, the Supreme Court's passing of Anti-Gay law has promised to end the reign of the church's Tax Exemptions. Meaning that churches can't pay the bill. End of religion in this country. Atheists should be rejoicing!)
(Sticks his Bible in the air, won't affect me. Bein' human, have my health. That's what's important.)
Uhhh, he wasn't commenting about Judaism dumbass, he was making a bigoted remark about ethnic Jews, i.e "Racist much?"
Who needs this anyway ?
You only need the first season, and end it there, everything afterwards was the Reapers indoctrination !
It's a very sad day indeed. Sankom advertising shitty english re-dubs again.
Bad anime in english dubs... Great.......
