Suisei no Gargantia has released the conclusive 2nd part of its OVA series, delivering an abundance of mecha action, and some skimpy mizugi antics in addition, to hopefully end the series on a reasonable note due to the unfortunate cancellation of the previously announced 2nd season.

I will say this again.
Why did this series need a second season?
It's all fine and good that they'd want to make an encore for the show's success, but overall, if the story had a good conclusion at the end of its season, then it's not due another season.
This goes same for Sword Art Online. The Aincrad through Alfheim story arcs that were exhibited in season one completed the story. I'm sorry, GGO, but you really weren't needed. (And in many ways you got me all worked up for a lousy and pointless ending.) And don't get me started on the last half of season 2.
(I'll admit that if Aincrad's arc was a little more fluid, had much less filler, and focused on the details that mattered Season 1 would have been better.)
I could keep listing anime where they had a good conclusive ending, where they gave it a second season, and in many ways hurt the first by doing so. Instead of making second seasons for series that don't need them, perhaps they could focus on giving us conclusions to series that WON'T get second seasons, but PROMISED a second season to shows that DIDN'T have a conclusion. I get it, they failed to make sales or whatever. Then THOSE shows should be given a final OVA that picks up from their cliffhanger season finale and at least give a generalized conclusion.
I could start listing the series that this would apply, but that list would get rather long.
I pretty much agree with what you said, but in this case a second season could have functioned more as a prequel and setup for any additional spinoff titles, while providing closure for this story arc.
I'm not even reading your lengthy comment because there is no season 2 happening anyways, so your complaints are really pointless. Season 2 was canceled and this OVA is the last Gargantia animation we will ever see. Congrats.
Ok, so I did read it after all and I guess your reasons for not wanting a S2 are sound. It's true that it ended nicely. Still, it is a bit sad that there can't be some kind of sequel or something new done that's outside of the original story. So many anime go on for 100s of episodes when it's unnecessary yet a good show like this ended with just 13... it'd have been better if it at least lasted for 26.
