There has been tremendous fan outcry over the new “despicably atrocious” character design for Digimon‘s upcoming continuation “Digimon Adventure Tri“, leading to the creation of a petition demanding that the new season have its character illustrations reverted to more resemble the Digimon Adventure of old.
The proposed changes that crazed fans are demanding, with the character’s eyes apparently being the most inexcusable issue:
The petition overall has received a rather meager level of support with about 2,000 total signatures, seemingly to doomed to join the near universal failure of online petitions to accomplish anything much at all.

Signed the Petition.
Would go a step further, demand them to use the old-school watercolor background designs... It's going to take quite a bit to convince me to like this movie series.
New design is god awful
I agree with these fans, Toei animation sucks, especially what they done to SM crystal in terms of quality.
Yuuuupp. They started annoucing digimon tri last year and it was only a month ago that ACTUAL DIGIMON DESIGNS were revelead.
Digimon? More like " Stereotipical anime characters wearing high school uniforms"
The items that were supose to represent them in the first season are not even there (besides the obligatory googles) but the cowbow hat, the harmonica, the laptop, the whistle.. the digvice.
Its not even explained if Takery and Hikari are gonna have the same digivice, since they made it canon that theirs changed forms in 02.
>Toei
That's explains everything.
Toei animation does suck, but that's not due to the character designs. There was no problem with Crystal making the characters look more like their manga renditions, seeing how the intention was to make a series closer to the manga over all, but it was the animating, directing, and storyboarding where everything fell apart.
Actually I think the design was a huge problem aswell.
Rozen Maiden and Maou Mayusha also suffered from this.
The art for a manga might be good(for mm it would be the LN), but it is god awfull for an anime.
latest Rozen Maiden design is the best
The new design looks almost as bad as the designs used for Durarara.
the new Durarara was indeed different, but it had it's own charm. doesn't bother me at all
new designs just make them look like random character x.
So giving them their old styled eyes would change that for you?
Who the hell honestly expects petitions to work nowadays?
I bet these same people would set up a business with an "honor system" in place.
They expect them to work because they do. It's just the stupid things that never have a chance.
Name one partition that worked
You're right, there aren't any partitions that worked. They're terrible ideas. Petitions have worked, tho - https://www.change.org/victories
They should have linked it for Foreign fans as well. I would have signed it.
Digimon Tri character design sure looks awful. It's supposed to be a nostalgia trip but they messed it up. As far as I know they couldn't even get all the voice actors on board for this.
Where does it say "it's supposed to be a nostalgia trip"? A nostalgia trip would be to just watch the old show again, or maybe a remake of it. This isn't a remake this takes place after the original stories. Of course they should look different! Only a blind otaku would be more interested in characters looking as cute/moe for a shonen style as they originally did rather than thinking logically and changing to reflect age and a new demographic.
Because it's the continuation of a >10 years old series, duh. If this wasn't supposed to be a nostalgia trip they should have just called the anime something else and made entirely new characters.
Digimon adventure had a finale. it didnt needed a second season
Maybe there's more reason to continue a series, but the reason to continue it after over 10 friggin' years sure as hell is to cash in on nostalgia.
You might as well say any sequel to anything serves to be a nostalgia trip for whatever preceded it then. There's more reasons to continue a series than just making it the same thing again. Nostalgia is gonna be a part of it of course, but that's not all there is to it. Any fan can still tell who everyone is in this art style anyways.
because the petition's in japanese -.-
if they really want the petition to be effective, they should at least made an english version and collect signatures worldwide. 2000 will multiply into 2000000 in no time for sure.
Maybe because they know how embarrassing they'd look to the rest of the world. They're only asking for 2500 signatures for some reason, anyways. They only need 30 more to be satisfied. I guess they really weren't being serious about getting the change made.
you do realize we're talking about otakus here?
They know they're emberassing, but they dont give a flying fork.
To other Japanese, no.. but to the rest of the world? Personal shame is different from national shame.
There's no such thing as an effective petition.
https://www.change.org/victories
Tell that to Steam and Bethesda.
I'll sign it, but only because I like these big anime eyes from late 90s.
Aye like them Eyes
I like the new one better, looks more matured.
I'm so surprised that this opinion is uncommon and looked down upon
"BUT MAH NOSTALGIAZ"
Fuck you and your nostalgia, man. People grow up, and so does animation. The new designs look beautiful and modern.
If this new series has Tai/Sora, TK/Kari get together.. I'm all for it. I hate the ending of season 2, including that X-mas episode.
What about Mimi and Koushirou? Those two should hook up. Taichi and Sora... I just can't see this working out. Taichi doesn't even see Sora as a girl.
Now Takeru and Hikari, those two at least had the potential to have something going on in DA01. Though, they grew apart in DA02.
Are you joking? Hints about Taichi liking Sora (and, to a lesser extent, about Sora liking Taichi) were dropped all over the place in DA, DA02 and both Diablomon movies. (In the dub, he even asks her out in DA02 episode 39, but the hints are there even in the original.)
As for Takeru and Hikari, I think the situation got complicated in DA02, but they didn’t grow apart from each other. Especially, Takeru seems to, uh, like Hikari but not insist that she likes him back. And she accepts his affection for what it is and plays on it when Daisuke is around, but, sadly, doesn’t seem to really reciprocate it.
As for Mimi and Koshiro, of course, we know from the 02 epilogue that Mimi got together with Jo (funny thing, by the way: episode 26 ends in a scene where Mimi jokingly offers her love to Jo). But, of course, since we’re discussing possible alternative pairings, this doesn’t matter.
The debate is over. Sora and Taichi was never a thing. Straight from the mouth of the creator:
http://jippy-kandi.tumblr.com/post/51900665766/digimon-creator-speaks-about-sorato-and-taiora
I don't watch re-dubbed anime, but even I know that the Digimon Re-Dub changed meaning all over the place.
As for Taichi and Sora,.. I don't think there was ever anything going on other than the two being childhood friends. (Childhood friend never wins.)
Taichi and Sora were together in the football/soccer club and good friends. To the point were Taichi views Sora as a dude. Maybe Sora feels more, but it's unlikely that Taichi would if ever confronted. I think even the incest route with Hikari has more chances than Taichi and Sora ever hooking up. The two just have zero chemistry going on.
And Mimi and Jou are supposed to be married at the end of DA 02? Did the Re-Dub also change this? Because as far as I know the Japanese version doesn't actually confirm any pairing at all.
Sorry, that should say episode 38, not 39.
Ah, and when I say episode 26, I mean of Digimon Adventure.
Thanks for the fascinating link!
None of what I said except Tai asking Sora out has anything to do with the dub, Anon.
I’ve just rechecked the epilogue, and it doesn’t clearly show Mimi with Jo like I thought. Maybe you’re right and that’s another dub thing, although I’m not even sure I have ever seen the dub of that episode at all. Anyway, I clearly screwed up somewhere, so disregard what I said about Mimi and Jo.
But Taichi and Sora? Please. When Sora is abducted, Taichi begs the others to let him go after her and admits she is “very precious” to him. After Sora’s crest glows for the first time, he says “I want to feel Sora’s love too!”, which eventually gets brushed off as a joke, but what sort of joke is that? In Our War Game, Taichi gives Sora a hairpin for her upcoming birthday (entirely of his own volition) and she gets mad at him because it “doesn’t match her hat”. Gets real mad. She won’t listen to him when he phones her, she won’t talk to him on her own, and yet she waits for an apology email. She considers apologizing herself, too, but decides against it at the last moment. Taichi tries to email her (but it doesn’t work because of Diablomon) but is afraid of phoning her. He doesn’t want to admit that they’re quarrelling or tell why they are, and his face gets all red when it’s mentioned. What is it if not a lovers’ quarrel? Koshiro’s reactions are appropriate, too. Eventually peace is settled when his email arrives to Sora with an accidentally added heart sign at the end—which Taichi doesn’t mind too much. In 02, when Sora wants to give a Christmas present to Yamato, Taichi sees her and she gets embarrassed. Taichi is sad but stoically encourages her to go, and even Agumon sees what’s going on and remarks that Taichi has gotten more mature. At this point he gives up Sora to Yamato, but he’s still the second after him: they’re seen sitting together later in the same episode, and in Diablomon Strikes Back, Sora stands between Taichi and Yamato (and even grips Taichi’s arm, not Yamato’s, when she’s about to fall).
And that’s just the most obvious instances.
(The Japanese epilogue does, of course, confirm two other pairings: Miyako/Ken and Sora/Yamato.)
so an old children show that's a ripoff of a ripoff has fans O_O
...what's a ripoff of what now?
Well, I don't think it could be Tamagotchi, since that's from the same company. And I don't think it's Pokemon, since that's been debunked so many times already that, by this point, you'd look like a total dumbass saying it (one major reasoning for which being that the Digimon franchise itself actually existed well before Pocket Monsters Red and Green ever hit store shelves). Assuming Anon 6:37 isn't a dumbass, I wonder what "ripoff" said Anon might be referring to.
i ended up reading those comments but who the fuck care really...
Pokémon is also a rip-off... Remember "catch demons and make them fight for you" (yep Megami Tensei)... Change demons to ridiculously colored cute animals and there, you have Pokémon.
Digimon was started as a Tamagotchi so yeah... It has nothing to do with Pokémon.
Also Digimon has more "monstrous" designs as it suits the name and theme.
Pokémon is just cutey fuzzy lil pets biting each others asses (even most serious Pokémon design can't get close to average serious Digimon design)
@Anon 17:38 @Chortos-2
Huh... I thought Digital Monster Ver. 1 (the first V-pet) came out a lot earlier, but it seems I was wrong. Point still stands, though. Pokemon and Digimon are too different and it's utterly moronic to try and claim one's ripping off the other just because they both have "mon" in the title (because using a shortened form of "monster" is apparently such a unique thing that nobody besides GameFreak could possibly think of, amiright?).
I think the concept of Pokemon was before Digimon but Tomogatchi beat them to market?
I just checked and wow, even Monster Rancher made it to the US market on PS1 before Pokemon released in 1998. It could be easy for someone in the US to see pokemon as the copy cat at the time... when in reality, Nintendo really did do the pioneering once again, lol.
I think for the US Digimon actually came first (the virtual pet released in 1997), but in Japan Pokemon came first in 1996. Pokemon games were late to arrive in the US in 1998. But yeah, Pokemon was created first. It even came before Tamagotchi, but I think it's more logical to believe that Digimon first followed in Tamagotchi's footsteps rather than Pokemon's, seeing how it first started with the Digital Pet device.
Although I agree with everything else you said,
> the Digimon franchise itself actually existed well before Pocket Monsters Red and Green ever hit store shelves
really? As far as I’m aware, the first Digimon product of any kind came out in the summer of 1997, while Pokémon Red and Green were released in February 1996.
Even still, they may be within the same genre but they're still leagues apart from each other in almost every way besides "monsters". Anyways, while I do prefer Digimon to Pokemon, but I prefer Monster Farm/Rancher to both. I doubt that'll be getting any love any time soon... except for a cameo in Deception 4.
Digimon was too much for Anonymous 6:37 to understand.
He/She needed a Baby Show that Babies who like "Pika Pika" could understand, and where the story was simple enough to understand as each episode was primarily the same from one to the next: Ash and friends go off to some town. Get to town to see a pokemon or a gym center... team rocket shows up, they beat up team rocket, win some award, and are off to the next town... and now repeat.
Whether or not it was first or second (being the show), Digimon was still the more intellectual show.
