There has been tremendous fan outcry over the new “despicably atrocious” character design for Digimon‘s upcoming continuation “Digimon Adventure Tri“, leading to the creation of a petition demanding that the new season have its character illustrations reverted to more resemble the Digimon Adventure of old.
The proposed changes that crazed fans are demanding, with the character’s eyes apparently being the most inexcusable issue:
The petition overall has received a rather meager level of support with about 2,000 total signatures, seemingly to doomed to join the near universal failure of online petitions to accomplish anything much at all.

Aye like them Eyes
I'll sign it, but only because I like these big anime eyes from late 90s.
new designs just make them look like random character x.
So giving them their old styled eyes would change that for you?
because the petition's in japanese -.-
if they really want the petition to be effective, they should at least made an english version and collect signatures worldwide. 2000 will multiply into 2000000 in no time for sure.
There's no such thing as an effective petition.
https://www.change.org/victories
Tell that to Steam and Bethesda.
Maybe because they know how embarrassing they'd look to the rest of the world. They're only asking for 2500 signatures for some reason, anyways. They only need 30 more to be satisfied. I guess they really weren't being serious about getting the change made.
you do realize we're talking about otakus here?
They know they're emberassing, but they dont give a flying fork.
To other Japanese, no.. but to the rest of the world? Personal shame is different from national shame.
New design is god awful
The new designs make them look generic as hell.
Everything is generic nowadays. I for one welcome the change in design. I always hated the way the digidestined looked in the second series. They just looked like stretched versions of their kid selves. :)
Same. I can't say I was overly fond of the original Adventure designs (I was particularly put off by the overly huge hands). I think the old anime's art style steadily improved by at least around the time Tamers began, but nonetheless, I kinda enjoy the new designs. Yeah, it might seem a bit generic, but as with the more recent video games, there seems to be a bit of "maturity" to it, I guess you could say (which would make sense; the target demographic now seems to be banking on nostalgia more than reeling in a newer child audience, with Bamco themselves claiming that Cyber Sleuth was targeted towards fans who grew up on the original Adventure 15 years ago, and Tri's more than likely the same).
your mom was so generic that i fell asleep during sex
Your joke is so generic that... zzzzzz
Smaller eyes is generic in an anime? It's practically counter-culture!
i honestly dont care :/
Same here.
Me three. Love the fact its even getting a second chance and will watch vigourously when it airs. I remember watching it after the original Pokemon seasons way back when. :)
It was a great time to love Monsters in general.
I enjoyed Digimon more than Pokemon at the time. It helps that Digimon actually had a plot.
Both kinds, even.
I agree with these fans, Toei animation sucks, especially what they done to SM crystal in terms of quality.
Toei animation does suck, but that's not due to the character designs. There was no problem with Crystal making the characters look more like their manga renditions, seeing how the intention was to make a series closer to the manga over all, but it was the animating, directing, and storyboarding where everything fell apart.
Actually I think the design was a huge problem aswell.
Rozen Maiden and Maou Mayusha also suffered from this.
The art for a manga might be good(for mm it would be the LN), but it is god awfull for an anime.
latest Rozen Maiden design is the best
>Toei
That's explains everything.
Yuuuupp. They started annoucing digimon tri last year and it was only a month ago that ACTUAL DIGIMON DESIGNS were revelead.
Digimon? More like " Stereotipical anime characters wearing high school uniforms"
The items that were supose to represent them in the first season are not even there (besides the obligatory googles) but the cowbow hat, the harmonica, the laptop, the whistle.. the digvice.
Its not even explained if Takery and Hikari are gonna have the same digivice, since they made it canon that theirs changed forms in 02.
They should have linked it for Foreign fans as well. I would have signed it.
I thought they changed the eyes so they'd look older...which they are.
More like a generic design rather than looking older.
The oval eyes would do little to make them look like they're in HS now.
If they had gone with the older style eyes in general, other people would be complaining about the designs.
You can't make everyone happy.
Same. Seems like a seinen trait... which could really lead to something awesome if it's any indication of the tone of this series, if it's targeting the now grown up fans of the original. These changes people seem to want make them look shonen styled again. How conservative.
They did show them as adults at the end of 02 and they still had big eyes there. They didn't change the eyes because they wanted them to look more mature but because that's the sameface style of the character designer they hired for Tri, all his anime look like this.
Indeed.
Most of them also had the same voice actors in the 02 epilogue as they did in the series proper, I may add.
digimon fans exist?
thats news to me
Yeah, the few that weren't duped by the Pokemon anime and gave it a shot only to realize it made the Pokemon anime look like an educational cartoon for toddlers.
so an old children show that's a ripoff of a ripoff has fans O_O
...what's a ripoff of what now?
Well, I don't think it could be Tamagotchi, since that's from the same company. And I don't think it's Pokemon, since that's been debunked so many times already that, by this point, you'd look like a total dumbass saying it (one major reasoning for which being that the Digimon franchise itself actually existed well before Pocket Monsters Red and Green ever hit store shelves). Assuming Anon 6:37 isn't a dumbass, I wonder what "ripoff" said Anon might be referring to.
Digimon was too much for Anonymous 6:37 to understand.
He/She needed a Baby Show that Babies who like "Pika Pika" could understand, and where the story was simple enough to understand as each episode was primarily the same from one to the next: Ash and friends go off to some town. Get to town to see a pokemon or a gym center... team rocket shows up, they beat up team rocket, win some award, and are off to the next town... and now repeat.
Whether or not it was first or second (being the show), Digimon was still the more intellectual show.
Even still, they may be within the same genre but they're still leagues apart from each other in almost every way besides "monsters". Anyways, while I do prefer Digimon to Pokemon, but I prefer Monster Farm/Rancher to both. I doubt that'll be getting any love any time soon... except for a cameo in Deception 4.
Although I agree with everything else you said,
> the Digimon franchise itself actually existed well before Pocket Monsters Red and Green ever hit store shelves
really? As far as I’m aware, the first Digimon product of any kind came out in the summer of 1997, while Pokémon Red and Green were released in February 1996.
I think for the US Digimon actually came first (the virtual pet released in 1997), but in Japan Pokemon came first in 1996. Pokemon games were late to arrive in the US in 1998. But yeah, Pokemon was created first. It even came before Tamagotchi, but I think it's more logical to believe that Digimon first followed in Tamagotchi's footsteps rather than Pokemon's, seeing how it first started with the Digital Pet device.
@Anon 17:38 @Chortos-2
Huh... I thought Digital Monster Ver. 1 (the first V-pet) came out a lot earlier, but it seems I was wrong. Point still stands, though. Pokemon and Digimon are too different and it's utterly moronic to try and claim one's ripping off the other just because they both have "mon" in the title (because using a shortened form of "monster" is apparently such a unique thing that nobody besides GameFreak could possibly think of, amiright?).
i ended up reading those comments but who the fuck care really...
I think the concept of Pokemon was before Digimon but Tomogatchi beat them to market?
I just checked and wow, even Monster Rancher made it to the US market on PS1 before Pokemon released in 1998. It could be easy for someone in the US to see pokemon as the copy cat at the time... when in reality, Nintendo really did do the pioneering once again, lol.
Pokémon is also a rip-off... Remember "catch demons and make them fight for you" (yep Megami Tensei)... Change demons to ridiculously colored cute animals and there, you have Pokémon.
Digimon was started as a Tamagotchi so yeah... It has nothing to do with Pokémon.
Also Digimon has more "monstrous" designs as it suits the name and theme.
Pokémon is just cutey fuzzy lil pets biting each others asses (even most serious Pokémon design can't get close to average serious Digimon design)
Do these people realize how ridiculous they sound, being so upset over a new series just over the size of the eyes? Where were these people when GitS Arise first showed up?
But I like GitS: Arise.
What does that have to do with anything? I'm only talking about the character art, just like what this Digimon petition is about. Because an anime having characters with smaller eyes is blasphemy.
I didn't understand people complaining about Arise back when it came out. What where they going on about anyway? Arise was pretty decent till they changed the personalities of most of the characters at which point I wondered why they even bothered to call it GitS.
What? Don't you remember everyone complaining about Motoko's new look? Her new younger look which seemed to be skewing towards modern moe/loli tastes? If people are complaining about smaller eyes so much in these character designs, how could the complaints against Arise make any less sense?? This has nothing to do with how the anime actually turned out or anything else about it, this is just about character designs diverting from what fans are used to. That's what's happening here now with Digimon Tri, except that GitS Arise never got a petition against it AFAIK.
