Well for once I'm actually quite surprised this list in particular doesn't consist of 9 characters from a single anime, and 1 oddball.
On the other hand, you can (once again) see the trend of dominant (and re-current) anime resting on their laurels yet again. How come there's (almost) no new characters on these lists most of the time, but only already seen faces, reapearing in season 2? Oh, right, because the Japs are a bunch of overtraditional xenophobic goons that are so inert, it takes a special kind of a person to allow them to grasp new concepts.

Shiro?! I watched the original Fate/Stay Night TV series and spent the entire time wishing that somebody would kill him. I haven't watched any Fate/Stay Night because he's the most annoying bastard I've ever known. Male characters who "just want to protect everyone" are the worst characters in anime.
I remember a scene when Sabre is fighting Rider (I think) on a roof and has the situation under control. Then Shiro turns up because he wants to protect her and messes the whole thing up. I was left thinking, "will somebody please kill this annoying prick!"

the new anime follows the Unlimited Blade Works route, while the original follows the Fate route. Worth noting is that the fight you mentioned with Saber vs Rider doesn't even happen in UBW.
He's MUCH MUCH better in the UBW route, I despised him when I read the Fate route, but grew to like him while reading the UBW route.
And he's even better yet in Heavens Feel.

I think everyone voting should be required to have seen at least 60% of every anime ever made. Would make for more interesting lists, even if just three people vote.
I think only the most intelligent people with good character should be allowed to vote in democracies but we both will have to make due with what we have.
I don't think that would make any difference. Read a translation of "Psychologie des foules" from Gustave Le Bon to figure out why. It's from 1895, but still holds true.
Basically, every decision you make as a group is equally bad. Doesn't matter if that group consists of geniuses or idiots. It's an interesting read that will probably change your life forever.

Actually, Just think about a point.
Start calculating just how much time HAS been wasted by the # of Anime you HAVE watched starting from when you started watching it.
I'm willing to bet you might be able to add a few years to your life had you not ever watched any.
Even so.
Even with the 30+ anime series that come out every season (not including run-ons) there is no one alive, that I know of, that doesn't sift over those 30 and find that they probably at most only watch 2-5 series. And among those 2-5 only 1 is truly watched out of enjoyment. The rest have an idea that sparks an interest, but after episode 2/3 you're watching experience goes all down hill. (You'll finish, but only IF your desire hasn't completely diminished or if you're just THAT BORED.)
The point is to give everything that doesn't look like utter garbabe a chance. You don't actually have to finish watching it to know you don't like it. For most shows around three minutes are more than enough to figure that out.

Wrong. There's not that much anime out there. It's around 5000 if you discount crapfests like Gudaguda Fairies. The number even goes down to ~3800 if you exclude music videos (~300) Bonus episodes for DVD/BD (~500) and other weird stuff.
From personal experience I can tell you that it takes around ten years to watch 3000 anime. So it's completely doable.
So for you, living alone or have an independent life is considered anormal..ok
Not everyone has the opportunity to live the American dream or have hobbies such as sailing, golf or every 2x a year traveling the world outside ..
For many small hobbies like watching anime becomes something more Comm than you think ..
Some shows you don't need to watch to know they are bad. Like you don't actually have to ever eat shit to know it probably tastes really, really bad. Or maybe you tasted shit before just so you can confidently say something else tastes like shit too and you know from experience.
For 4everalones maybe! but for normal people need to be a vampire to see lots of animes, and choice the betters not only see lots of fails.
