Damn, what a beautiful school. The architecture, the mountainous layout, the greenery... just beautiful. And so clean. Hope those kids are properly appreciating how good they have it.
Question: does anyone knows where in japan exactly is the locations? I mean, looking at the pictures it seems its not a big city or its in the far edges of it....
Kyoto.
Euphonium is set in Uji, between Kyoto and Nara, so, considering Kyoto Animation is based in Kyoto, I'm going to assume that the location shots actually were taken in Uji because it's really only a short drive away from the animation studio itself.
Oh, pardon, Kyoto Animation itself is in Uji, exactly where Euphonium is set.
I think most of the street location shots in K-ON! were also Uji and Kyoto even if it wasn't set there.
You lived there? Wow, you know too much.
Yes, on the map in 21.jpg you can see that at least that particular station is Rokujizō in Uji.
They do what's easiest. It doesn't make any difference it it's for animation or live action. For animation it's a lot less work to have a reference photo then make up a background. There are also reference photo for thing like cars, props, etc.
I you live in an area where they shoot a lot of movies or TV you can sometimes recognize real life location. Typically when the plot has shots in different places they completely ignore the real geography. They make things that are kilometers apart seem like they are next door. If you see this sometimes it's really funny.
Wow!
It's amazing!
The IC card reader shot is wrong. The animation shows Suica and Passmo, but the picture shows Icoca and Pitapa. It shouldn't be that hard to find a closer match!
Animation has really improved! Sometimes I have a hard time distinguishing animated version from the real one, like the rabbit fountain.
That's not animated though, it's a matte painting. Animation is the MOTION of something, what you are appreciating is a painting.

Or it could be that some of the viewers actually, you know, live there? Doesn't automatically mean that some recluses from downtown Tokyo travelled all over the country looking for matches.
This was my thought as well. If you live there it's easy enough to say "hey, I know where that is". Still, to get the photos match the angle basically you have to go there with the anime scene at hand, which does take a bit of time and dedication.
I appreciate the effort.
Seeing how this has became a prominent gimmick among slice of life animes, I have a question: does making location accurate backgrounds actually make the production easier or harder?
For one you'll have to go to all the locations to take the actual photos, and then I imagine you still would end up with having to throw away hundreds of photos before you get the ones you are really going to need.
On the other hand you can somewhat just trace the photos, which could potentially decrease many hours otherwise needed to draft the scene from scratch.
Considering that I don't think 99.999999% of viewers care if the backgrounds are accurate to real life locations, I'm guessing it's more of a gimmick for production related-reasons.
i think it is easier because you don't have to think about what kind of city you have to draw. For every new chapter, you have to think about new scenery or your anime become sucks. I magine if you have to make scenery for anime with 20 minutes, How many backgrounds you have to draw? And how creative of you to make that many different background in one week?
Besides, it is three birds in one stone. One, you get your anime. Two, you promote your city. All you have to do is making a photo and make it similar don't have to be same. And three, you get this thread.
Anyone thoughts?
Imho, it is quite a bit easier, then again, only did Doujins.
What if you just get the pictures off google maps? You wouldn't have to take pictures at all!
I believe it`s easier to use ready designed backdrops.
It's easier because instead of creating 3D maps of the locations for your painters to work with, you can simple do a dry run of your scene at the actual setting, and work from the footage you capture.
japanese don't have original thoughts, so tracing scenery is much easier than creating original artwork
Ya sure, Hollywood, Disney, or almost all of the major networks with daily "news" program, is that you speaking?
Here is a free mirror and both a pot & a kettle for ya. Unless you are HBO or AMC, you got no right to say a peep. That almost goes for you too, BBC.
you're being junk-feed by Western cartoons that is why your brain is filled with less-detailed backgrounds.
I misread the title as "Lactations" and was severely let down after clicking.
The studio is deserving of milking the fans' money.
Does that count?
like comparing heaven and hell
That's why 2D always wins.
haha the last photo has a poster promoting the very show that the scene is referencing
While I can't fault them for their ability to translate these places to a digital format, I do wonder how many of them are just traced or painted over.
Take 63/64 and 67/68 as examples, it's hard to believe that an artist simply copied those with extreme accuracy rather than painted over them.
Does is really matter though? As I see it, it give the show a sense of reality, allows fans to get closer to the characters by visiting the real-life locations and promotes tourism in the area. It's a win-win-win situation.
