those shows were good, but this has nothing to do with them, and it's dumb comparing them. if you compare those shows to the latest Gundam,or psycho pass is ok they are on the same genre, and they are quite solid too. but heck this show is good for the genre it belongs to.
If you don't like the genre don't watch it.

Do not get me wrong, I think until RahXephon overall well done and OST is not bad, but the story ..
It was sluggish. The aliens had no purpose of their own. What were doing on Earth anyway? "Let's appear and take Tokyo hostage, because Tokyo is the center of the universe! ... Oh, and occasionally send out robots to kill people outside but not too many because everytime we do, we lose and one of us is going to die!" No purpose at all. The girl that always appeared to the protagonist (forgot the names)... yeah, who would have thought she had something to do with the mecha. By episode 6 you could know how the show ends. No surprise, no twist, no suspense. Just some teenage mood swings that made no fucking sense, parental abandonment, soul searching, beach episode, crush on older superior officer that he lives together with (where have I seen that before...). It might have been passable at 13 episodes or OVA series but not 26 episodes. The fact that they could put the entire plot into a 90 minute movie says it all.
Watch Bokurano instead.

Sure, Leopard's very cute but they seem to not sexualize her at all (which is odd, considering her ancestor's tendency to have her clothes tattered every time, even in the 2008 remake). They prefer doing that to Voltkatze and Elephantus...which is a thing I'm fine with, because the former is sexy as hell! But I also like loli, so I hope to see more Leopard fanservice.
