Japanese space team Hakuto have announced plans for an unmanned lunar expedition to reenact Evangelion’s “Spear of Longinus” piercing of the moon, although of course they do not plan to pay for it themselves.
Hakuto have resorted to crowd-funding site Readyfor to garner the cash – which stands at a whopping ¥100,000,000, or about $1,000,000; with the deadline being April 5th.
The crowd-funding trailer:
The campaign has already gained about ¥11,245,000 in but a single day (and is now at ¥30,000,000) – should the project ever be fully funded, fans can expect the spear to be launched aboard a spacecraft from the US in a stunning display, with supporters receiving illustrations, T-shirts, replicas of the spear and other sundry trinkets (or alternatively, for the team to run off with the cash or beg for even more after it is fully funded and underway).

I'd rather they crowd fund a Rei-clone
that would be 1,000,000,000.00 USD for you.
Really? wouldn't it be better to use that money for a humanitarian cause instead of using it for this otaku acid trip?
Isay the above because it wouldn't surprise me, that they get the funds.
Doing stuff in space got us Tang and Microwave Ovens, what has feeding the poor got us but blowing up the population to needless levels?
You forgot lasers, computers, and many other things (well, I'm oversimplifying, but you get the drift).
Also, PEOPLE SPEND THEIR MONEY HOW THEY FUCKING WANT TO. Why is this such a hard concept?!
And if you really care that much go look at military budgets, those are the ones that are overblown, not fucking space travel that could take our civilization to whole new levels of advancement.
Really, just tiny little 240mm?! Come on, you can't even see that and it probably breaks if it hit's the ground. The whole idea sounds funny and stupid, but with that goal it sounds even dumber. Should be at least 1m IMO. Then it would be cool and they can say that they achieved something. But this is a great idea to fund some space projects, especially ones with innovative techniques and such. Let's see if they can reach their goal.
You know, not that I don't agree that it's ridiculously pointless to go to all the trouble for such a small object... You *do* understand the kind of cost-per-kilo we're talking about just to get stuff into Earth orbit, let alone onto the lunar surface, right?
Maybe they should send up some kind of auto-factory to optically focus the raw sunlight and laser-sinter lunar dust into glass. A two meter long Lance of Longinus made of solid lunar silicon would be badass.
Never got into Eva, but I've seen plenty of fan art, which includes all outfits shown in the first image.
So I have one question: are the duplicate Asuka and Rei supposed to be from an alternate universe (since they're in the same poster) or is it just a reference to previous iterations of the series?
P.S. I know there's some junk with Rei that could explain her duplicate, but nothing for Asuka, to my knowledge.
The Asuka facing away is Shikinami Asuka (eyepatch is visible) while the one facing is Soryu Asuka. The Rei facing back is Plugsuit 09 Rei and the one facing us is Rei from the original series.
Gainax revamped the characterizations between the original TV series and the remake movies. Asuak less of bitchy brat, Rei is less of an emotionless doll, and Shinji is less of a useless whiny prick. In other words, the chars are less extreme in their characteristic trait and a little bit more balanced.
Because of these changes (plus some minor changes in char design), the movie version tend to viewed and regarded as separate chars in a why. Hence you will see quite a number of images with "duplicate" or mirror versions of chars (well, mainly Asuka because she had the most changes overall, including a name change).
Oh you adorably ignorant pleb... Rebuild takes place after End of Evangelion, it isn't a remake.

I can't believe they managed to get bored enough to launch that project...
Money well spend.
Of bloody course they wont pay for it, they expect Evangelion fans who would give their lives for an over pretentious, peice of shit anime series that has only one good thing going for it, music. This project is a waste of money if it ever actually gets funded.
Sounds like a RahXephon fan.
Shinji Ikari, the ancestor of today's male mc's.
Does Shinji not have a dick or is that a girl in the foreground?
it's officially toothpick-sized
It's smaller than Shinji's penis.... which is very small, or is that a girl in the foreground?
Babe on left in red (in photo) is really cute.
That moon model looks more like Io, a moon around Jupiter.
Io has a little more a sun-type look to it, though, given it's state as molten rock.
how big is the spear they shove up in the moon gonna be?
as big as my butthole

Evangelion is the perfect vehicle to drive innovation in biotech research, genetics and human cloning.
You know, when Kickstarter first launched, I didn't expect it to be used to crowdfund vandalising the fucking moon with anime bullshit.
It's so ridiculously tiny, what's the point? If scale is anything, it can't be bigger than 3 feet. At what I'd expect, it appears even smaller than that based on the scale of the delivery vehicle depicted...
I am not sure are you aware, they say exactly what size the spear will be. It approximately will have 3.3m - Last donation says that as well, that you will be getting the copy of the same spear they will be sending to the moon.
No, they will send a 24cm, 30g spear to the moon. The 3.3m version is only for that one person who donated 10,000,000yen.
Yeah, I think the woman in red is holding the spear they're gonna send, right there in the picture with the moon...
lolwut? Yeah let's just chuck a giant dart at the moon. What could possibly go worng?
No one will touch it for a long time, it'll be laid on the regolith for decades. I doubt anyone will discover it even, even when we're back on the moon, no ones going to be looking for it, and the moon is pretty damn big.
exactly. nothing.
The moons mass is 7.34767309 × 10^22 kilograms.
and we send an object weight in few kilos.
What does it do? nothing.
More like 24cm long and 30 g in weight. Plus it's not thrown but sent with a probe that will calmly place it on the surface I guess. The spear is just publicity stunt sent along with the actual device.
That's one way of winning the X-Prize, I guess.
Next mission - America putting hamburger, gun and a CocaCola bottle on the moon.
What if North Korea planted a flag on the moon before America? It'd be the ultimate troll. It'd troll Obama to actually give NASA the money they need to be serious with space.
Are you joking? Our Great Leader Kim Jong-Il takes a vacation to the moon every month! Why do you think it shines so much once every month? Full moon? Bah! That be because our Great Leader is visiting there!
I'm pretty sure the 7th flag doesn't count for as much.
Unless North Korea invents a time machine first, you're sadly out of luck.
Not before Jap's go back to put Rice, swords, and more anime there first.
This whole franchise could've been so much better without these filthy yaoi/fuckjoshit-bait pricks.
Here is the team website and their mission goals. I guess the spear is just a side mission. http://lunar.xprize.org/teams/hakuto
this is not gonna work, but if it does, then doesn't anyone realize there might be some serious trouble later on?
Like not having the weapon on earth in case of an angel attack?
Yes, what can we ever do without that 24cm long spear... Seriously, the one they're sending is about the size of the one held by the woman in red...If not the exact same.
What kinda nonsense is this?
Is called Evangelion bussines and hype for the next movie.
And yes the third be a total epic CRAP.
This is cool and all but where are the plans to build a colony on the moon?
No one has come up with Moon One yet, I'm sure the Mars One people will be right on it. Because who doesn't love a good scam?
China recently announced plans to start mining Helium-3 on the moon. That's one of the more logical reasons to set up a moon colony. If it proves successful and helpful for starting fusion reactors, then expect many other countries to follow suit.
this will certainly not end like first ep of "Space:1999" :)
