The first PV has been released for upcoming Subaru-sponsored mahou shoujo series “Houkago no Pleiades“, introducing its cast of lovely girls while also demonstrating the all important transformation sequence – and of course including more of its “subtle” vehicular references.

I'm still waiting for a yuri with a actual drama vibe - maybe dealing with the wholoe "should I try to fit in with society, or go with my ehart?" feel - make for an interesting run. But wishful thinking, people want it to always be cute and cuddly, with zero sign of discrimination issues~
There's probably quite some anime like that, I dunno because I couldn't care for that (sounds pretty boring). But look and you'll find.
Most yuri anime however is light-hearted because of the audience; you could make serious social commentary, stir controversy and maybe even come off as heterophobic, or you could just show pretty girls acting cute and being fun to watch, for the (predominantly pervert) audience. It's extremely easy to appeal to basic instincts and most producers/studios like to follow proven formulas so there's that.
I wouldent nessacarily want either extreme tbh. Just a healthy balance, something that moves the heart as much as the balls :P. Throw in some humor, mix in sexytime, and add some in serious stuff at points for character growth/depth.
Good luck finding such a thing though, closest is Strawberry panic, and even thats pretty lol for a yuri
