In Japan they are VERY much alive.
A lot of console games are also released in Japanese arcades before being ported to Playstation/Nintendo etc
Even Blazblue & Guilty Gear arcades are active.
I visited Japan and they have soooo many arcade stations all over the place. It is also very fun to watch them. They seem to enjoy themself with it. it just a different feeling and much more social than playing them at home on pc or console.
Arcades are better if you ask me. The feel of the fight between two players, the tension as it gets to the last round where it decides the match, that fun thing games suppose to give... all of that is lost because of laziness.. a game whenever we want, wherever we want it - it actually destroyed the fun of the game. Now even social games force you to add strangers otherwise you'd lose out.
