Square Enix have finally revealed Final Fantasy XV‘s western version, showing off the game’s English dub with its not underided “car ride” trailer – and with fan reaction typically writing it off as generic and unexceptional.
The previously debuted trailer, now in English:
Fortunately most players will probably be too preoccupied with the game’s amazing character designs and outstanding gameplay to worry too much about the dubbing…

This game is tailor-made for a certain Sancom writer who is a closet Free fudanshi.
There's an element of realism to it. If you lived in a Final Fantasy world and went out hunting or on quests, you'd likely be with guy friends instead of girls.
No need to live in a fantasy world for that. Who the hell goes hunting with a woman?
You've already debunked your own logic. "Fantasy world".
Not really. He's implying the game is kinda gay as they're a bunch of guys traveling together. But as said, I could see that being common place among male friends in a world like that.
To be honest, traveling and hunting with fellow men soudns more fun than dealing with women anyway. :V
Yes, "guys", not metrosex girlyboys.
Ehh Fudanshi, that's a new one and I don't even need to google that to know what it means, it's just scuh a logical derivation.
Sounds fine to me. It's not like I can claim the Japanese voice acting was any good or not considering I don't understand it.
Honestly both the japanese and english dubs sound generic and by the books.
One doesn't have to understand a language to deem the voice acting good or bad. Just listen to what's spoken, whether it sounds fluid or unnatural, whether the voices fit the characters, etc.
Luckily Japanese seiyuu know what they are doing and their acting almost always sounds natural. English and other language VAs almost always are just reading the script and overemphasize certain words. That's why most dubs simply suck... not forgetting the fact that there are at most 15-20 VAs doing everything, out of which like 5-6 are in every dub doing main characters :/ (can be compared to the overuse of seiyuu like KanaHana, Tomatsu Haruka, Hayami Saori... although there are still dozens of other available seiyuu, whereas English VAs don't)
It doesn't really work like that.
If you don't have a good understanding of a language you can't tell if its good or bad.
Sure you can pick out painfully poor dubbing but anything above average would go right over your head.
In German everyone sounds angry that doesn't mean they are and what sounds polite, strong, shy, passive, demanding in one language can sound very different in the other.
If voice acting was as simple as "sound angry, Now sad" anyone could do it. You need slight changes things you wouldn't even pick up unless trying to hear it.
Slight tone dips, vocabulary, talking speed, all these things are hard to pick up if you don't know what is being said since you don't know a natural way to say it.
@02:45 17/12/2014 Thats interesting as someone who also understands a nice chunk of what's being said I found most anime to be very average. Not bad just not the "1000X times better than every other dubbing, they put their soul into it" people make it out to be; They were good, yeah, Its just obvious why it is there stuck to dubbing anime.
I certainly wouldn't call them leagues above an American voice actor.
Still, as someone who understands about half of what's being said in a Japanese dub of your average anime due to taking Japanese classes (things like GitS are another matter bacause high-level vocabulary), I find that Japanese VAs are orders of magnitude better than not only English VAs in dubbed anime, but English VAs in English cartoons as well.
Most of it though has to do with lackluster voice directing and really bad scripts. How much of an effect that has can be seen in high profile releases, like Ghibli movies, where the quality of English dubs is much higher and in most cases comparable to Japanese dubs.
All that said, I kind of like the Eng dub for FF XV. The Japanese dub is just as stereotypical and considering the setting, the white-washed dialog is even quite fitting.
They're still using porn actors for these chinese child programs.
^ Nah, porn actors get better pay than what Square Enix offers. Considering Square Enix spends all their budget on visual effects and graphics. Like most game companies nowadays.
shut the fuck up you weboo
This dub is generic as the Japanese dub.
Final Fantasy XV are more like "Final Boyband XV"
I remember when Final Fantasy character designs used more colors than just black. Actually, same goes for a lot of clothing designs nowadays, such as in movies.
I remember when Final Fantasy was good
the color scheme and setting is used to set a tone. professionals know this, amateurs point and criticize, dummies don't care.
It's highly likely that FFXV will come with a Japanese audio option. Whether it be through a Chinese version that has JP voicing with English subtitles(FFXIII, and FFXIII-2 had this), or as DLC(FFXIII:LR had this). Even the HD port of FF:Type-0 is confirmed to have Dual audio.
Unless Square-Enix is utterly retarded that is.
Totally gay!
I dont know so iam seeing a trailer of a Gran Turismo...Black desert or Monster Hunter plop.
as usual En dubs are inferior to the original JP voice actors.
also the game already looks generic and bland if they havent already noticed. driving around somewhat static environments only more open now, as opposed to the uber-linear ff13.
Just should of had Troy Baker and Nolan North do all the voices....they seem to do every other game.
I'm fine with the voices. They are supposed to sound natural, not like the caricatures like in anime. They aren't distracting and get the point across.
Granted, I do think sometimes voices are perfectly chosen and really enjoy them, but I don't see anything to complain about with these guys yet.
i like it. it certainly sounds better than final fantasy x's crow laughter. the fact that they are saying generic phrases simply means they are avoiding spoilers. everyone's a critic i guess, even if they can't do better themselves.
Don't know about you guys, but it looks awesome and if it will play awesome I'm totally sold and Squenix will redeem itself in my eyes.
Let's hope it won't disappoint.
Yep, party banter is going to be really annoying, enough to maybe skip the game.
Dubbing is awful.
I need to buy the JP Voice DLC for LR:FFXIII.
It was free when I got it, but I think it was a limited time offer...
I don't even want to watch the English trailer. Has SE said anything about adding the Japanese VO? I guess there's hope since PC version of FFXIII and -2 has Japanese VO and I think Lightning Returns has them as DLC on the consoles.
At least its not Vic Mignogna
I am completely convinced that the only thing dubbed was the trailer. My bet is that the game will be dubbed in a year and that the work done now is going to be different from what they will add then, and for the better because the actors and directors will have more content to work with.
i dont know why they still waste resources in english dubs
for me 95% of them are garbage, not to say they all are
love hearing the media im watching in their original language, i dont mind the subs, one can modify whats been read with whats being heard. stuff is lost in translation yes but less is lost when the original language is whats being listened at
Japanese voice with English subtitle is the best. They just won't do that because it feels like they admit their defeat.
That's how I watch Anime.
Japanese voice with subtitles.
My Japanese is getting better all the time.
woot....
It's not like they could fit both DUBs onto the disc, right? ;)
Just discard the english dub
they might not be able. the ff13 game on steam is like 50+ gigs and it is a linear game with older graphics.
It's just so they can sell more units. Not everyone wants to read subtitles and not everything thing is translated like shouts in battles.
Who listens when playing video games anyway. This shit looks like a ground breaker though. Those graphics, dat gameplay.
As long as it got subtitles then I'm good to go. Don't even give any fucks at all about voices.
I've heard much worse. This kinda had a few sonicy sounding characters but otherwise. I'm far more concerned about the setting.. You drive around in the wilds in a car? Is this square's idea of open world? Why is there only one female character in the trailer? No towns? What are the characters even doing?
>Why is there only one female
Thats really sexist, How do YOU KNOW that person is female? they might identify as a male or female or neither.
Stop projecting YOUR views on others.
In fact they might all identify as female and you're saying everyone but the one who you deem female is right? Get over yourself you sexist prick.
your just going to have to wait until the game is released.
The voices aren't that bad...
Hell, try listening to Baten Kaitos or Arc Rise Fantasia.
If your saying it isn't that bad...
Then i am convinced, it's that bad.
Listen to the Karin anime dub. Watch your ears get raped.
how2watch my own ears?
Arc Rise Fantasia was so lolzy. Three high school kids could have done a better job.
have you heard the dubbing on gantz. if i hadn't seen the japanese version first, i would have written it off as garbage, and who could forget the mega man 8 fiasco. although that was so bad it was good. lol. "enjee kwistals. we must find dr. wahwee, wa-megaman."

Anon @17:11 is right.
it's really not so bad guys. People are too biased towards jp dubs nowadays. it's starting to irritate me.
It's even dumber when most people dont even understand Japanese yet they prefer hearing moonspeak.
In FF13 for instance, the only bad ones english voices were Vanilla and Fang's.
