Final Fantasy VII Arrives on PS4

Wondrous-Tifa-by-matsuryu

The recent “PlayStation Experience” keynote has revealed that there are plans to bring the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy VII to the PS4, albeit perhaps not in the form that the game’s legion of devoted fans desire.

The soon to be PS4 game is merely a port of the previously released and marginally enhanced PC version – a PV was also revealed, though why one was needed is beyond comprehension:

FF7-Released-On-PS4

It seems fans will have to to bide their time for quite a while longer, but whether Square Enix is even capable of accomplishing a worthy remake of such a cult classic already seems doubtful – though Final Fantasy VII for the PS4 will arrive next spring all the same.

imagine it is the same as the ff7 from ps1, and it still gets more sales than the new ff14,15 (not sure what it is now)
that further prove how bad ff gets by time

FF XXX will be a picture book with really shiny holograph 3D pictures and no gameplay whatsoever. But halfway through the story one of the female protagonists dies and everyone will be really sad about that.

-.0 _( I doubt that Final Fantasy will even reach XVI after they no doubt will BOMB XV.)

o.O _(Although, just food for thought... I could imagine that Final Fantasy XXX probably already exists on some Hentai site featuring all the female protagonists of the last 7 or so Final Fantasies. Although I personally would ask Monty Oum for more Dead Fantasy, that was far more entertaining.)

I stopped supporting Square after they Acquired ENIX... and then murdered ALL of their series: Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile.

Star Ocean 1, 2, and 3 were actually good games... (3 after the Director's Cut edition.) All were done while Enix.

Valkyrie Profile was much better game than 2.

    Kill Square

    Bring the old Enix Back!

At least it's not as bad as their attempt to charge for streaming it (IOW, a digital rental). Though, both utterly pale in comparison to just buying the fucking thing off the PlayStation Store (albeit that's not available on the PS4).

A remake is what fans THINK they want. They THINK it's gonna make them feel like they're a teenager again, to have a nostalgic experience without any of the old low res graphics.

But they couldn't be more wrong. Anything even as simple as a graphics overhaul is gonna be completely different. It's not gonna be the game they loved. That's the part they don't understand.

That is even if it were a simple graphics overhaul which it wouldn't even be, it would be linearized and dumbed down, "streamlined" according to the holy Modern Game Design Rules. So that's even worse.

reboots and remakes don't NEED to be shitty, or just have graphics upgraded and gameplay ruined.

However, given the fucks SE give about games being actually good nowadays, you might be right.

There are a lot of remakes of games, movies and TV shows. If the original plot and design worth remaking, it will give the original product a much better enhancement with the stuff that the designer wanted to put it into the game but they were not able to due to the limitation of the technology level back in the days and make the product more ideal. Pokemon, batman series, ironman etc (the list goes on and on) are good examples. It will create new fans and introduce the story to new generations that never heard of it. If we never refresh it, all the older gen. stuff will just fade off. Remake is necessary to keep it alive for decades to come. Think about (again) ironman and batman... they were designed back in the 1960s and yet, kids that are below 10 yrs old in 2014 knows what batman is. If we never refresh the story and the look of batman, he will be forever a pervert in tight suit who wear his under pants outside.

SqEx isn't capable of doing something of FF7 scale, much less with modern (by "nextgen" standards) graphic.

    Comment by Anonymous

They very much are, they already have. FF7 is not as special as everyone makes it out to be. It's still a linear game with an overworld that pretends it's larger than it is.

It's that it really has not held up as well over time as people think. We're all looking at it with nostalgia goggles. To make it relevant to the fans, they have to make it more grown up and at the level of storytelling they basically did with FFXIII, which, regardless of peoples' feelings for it, unarguably was at the same level of 'dark' as FF7. They make cloud brood now, which he didn't really do in the game, at least not what I derived from our received translation. Sarcasm and brooding aren't the same.

Anyway, to make it fit the evolution of society, they'd need to adjust some things, and that will piss people off. So you piss off the fans if you change something, but you piss them off if you don't change anything. So it's just a shit situation.

Ain't all games a little linear? To me, linear is if you can't play the game in the order you want to, but you have to play it the way the game intends for you to play it. Basically all JRPGs do that. Can't go there without going to this place first, but to go to this place you have to find this item hidden in that dungeon etc. etc.

That's probably the kind of hidden linearity the Anon was talking about. But that's kinda the whole point of JRPGs. Like the whole point of racing games is to basically drive in circles.

The thing that made XIII hideous was the map design. After all, driving a racing game where every track is perfect circle is really dumb.

    Comment by Anonymous
    11:37 08/12/2014 # ! Neutral (0)

The thing is, it doesn't matter if in FF7 you're -supposed- to go to a certain place or not. What matters is that you can delay that, and visit entire optional towns and caves, roam around on the world map and find a secret ninja character if you go in a forest, or, once you gain better transportation, explore where ever you want around the world and find unique things.

Who cares if there's an order to the main storyline? The things you mention give a game structure. Without them, the world just becomes a meaningless heightmap with boring randomly generated crap strewn about that's all the same and you don't want to bother with anymore after a while. Kinda like the Elder Scrolls games. And, I say this with pain my heart, kinda like the latest 3DS Zelda game where the ability to have every item right at the start of the game made it all feel a bit more pointless.

Anyway, it wasn't -just- the onrails map design that made XIII hideous, it was the total lack of any content at all besides battles. Their sad attempt to negate this with that one grass field that you got to run around in at the end, doing those pathetic excuses for "missions" which paled in comparison to those in FFXII? That didn't help matters at all.

So yeah, to call FFVII "linear" in a series where FFXIII (and let's not forget FFX!) exist, I feel is an insult to FFVII.

@20:09: ....hmm, it's gone. I typed a bunch of stuff.

In summary: I think it's wrong and confusing to call FFVII "linear" when FFX and FFXIII exist. VII has goals but lets you explore a world and figure them out yourself. XIII and to a lesser extend X (yes, let's not pretend it wasn't a huge step down) are long on-rails cutscenes with battles.

    @Chen-04

Chen's got it. I was referring to the perceived linearity. Just because you can run in circles leveling with a chocobo outside midgar before fighting that creature at the beginning of the first cave does not make it 'open world' no matter what. The only difference in ANY game is how much it gives off the illusion of open. Every game, even Skyrim, is linear, no matter what anyone actually says. In the end a certain set of events must be completed to finish the game. The only games that are in fact non-linear are MMOs or party games or the odd one out like Minecraft that have no plot, characters or point beyond their gameplay.

Final Fantasy X and XIII are wonderful experiments because they did the exact same thing as the other, the only difference is people whined about XIII before it was released on internet boards and sheep spread the word that it was 'linear.' The only difference between their presentation was their plot reasons for moving forward.

@02:37: HAHAHAHA oh god, you just keep trying.

FFXIII is a dumbed-down piece of shit. No amount of crying "it's just as linear as every other game honest!" is gonna change anything about that. If they turned Far Cry into an on-rails arcade shooter today, I bet you'd be all over that trying to tell people how the game has barely changed. Hilarious!

And it's not just the linearity, it's the total lack of anything to do besides battle, period. It's a fucking abomination of an excuse for a JRPG. It's a "pretend RPG" minigame, that happens to last 40 hours and they made you pay full price for at release.
