A Kickstarter for the upcoming English translation of legendary slice-of-life visual novel Clannad has emerged, with Sekai Project requesting assistance from Clannad’s highly dedicated fanbase to properly bring the game to an English-speaking audience.
Sekai Project stated that they turned to Kickstarter due to the immense costs required to translate a roughly 50-hour game and to also pay for the obligatory royalties – though with contributions accumulating to a staggering $87,000 in but a day, well over half of the $140,000 goal, they look to be well on the way there.
Those desiring an official English translation of this visual novel classic can support the Kickstarter now, ending January 9th – though with legions of passionate fans having already donated a hefty portion of the goal, it will be only a matter of time before English speakers can experience the glory of Clannad firsthand.

I'm confused by the voicing part.
"Yes! If the project is successfully funded, it will be fully voiced in Japanese"
...if I remember correctly, isn't the game already voiced to begin with? So they aren't actually adding anything to that part. The way that it is phrased makes it sound like they are adding voices.
This is really what I came to point out, this seems really odd. Does Japan have some weird licensing issues when publishing audio to other regions?
Yeah the voice acting is normally costs more to licence and is sometimes a stretch goal.
Wish they would have rephrased it like that. I thought it meant they were planning to rehire the voice actors to redo the voices or something.
It's not only Japan. Any voice actor in he world would ask for their money, since they have the rights for their voice. Although those rights can very well be under 1$, depending on the lenght of their part and the rights of the whole thing...
The truth is, many times are redubbed or releases without voices just because it's cheaper, not because costs not being covered. Just try to count how many Disney movies were redubbed when they came out in DVD format in different countries...
Remember "Koihime Musou" and "Kara no Shoujo", 2 VNs, that was released in English without the Voice Files, because it was to expensive to license.
The Translation can't be worse then the crappy Fan Translation thats for sure
Can't wait for the Official english version
You never know, if they get lazy and use the fan translation it will show though
TIGHT LOLIBITCHES
and you have big butt hole haha
MONSTROUS NGGRPENIS
Sunohara is happy to be in the cover image at all T^T
"But I feel like there's someone missing."
と便座カバー

Wrong "Cute Cry", also wrong series....lol
Sunohara is the best character in that VN.
I enjoyed the anime, and I wish them success with their Kickstarter... but I don't want to play the game.
For me, playing the game, with its multiple endings and resolutions, would kind of destroy the story that was presented in the anime. I know that doesn't bother many (most?) people, but it does bother me.
Of course, I suspect that I am merely insane.
Why would it.. all those routes have been basically animated anyway.

PS: Since Jul '09 we even got the Kyou Arc animated.

nice...now how about a kickstarter to replace the gawd awful English dub in the anime.
will somebody play this game? I'm waiting for Far Cry 4,Street Fighter 5,Tekken 7 and so on.
>professional translators panhandling

Clannad VN has something like a few hundred thousand words in it. So they would need to hire a proper translator and those don't come cheap. Thus the high goal to reach that has been reached on kickstarter.
50$ digital release on kickstarter probably means 60$ after launch. So, 60€ in europe. Yay!
I was in the clannad thread in /A/ on 4chan last night. And there is a big fan base out there for it myself included.

lol, Clannad
Key-Aids still popular, I see.
Wut? I already completed this VN years ago, in complete English with voicing.
That was a Fan Translation
That is a lot of money they are asking... especially considering that the majority of western otaku are fickle with their tastes. Currently, ~1.4k backers at 110k, approx 75USD per backer which is quite pricey for a game.
But most important of all: Will it have uncensored HCG scenes?
Clannad doesn't have any h-scenes.
That is besides the point. It should have HCG!
it already broke the goal, so yeah~
All these characters need eye wranglers.
too bad they cant fix the poor drawing quality
Yeah, their eyes are still abnormally huge.
Of course they can. They won't though. Clannad art isn't that bad and still better than the art in 99% of the anime shit on Steam.
Now if only Pixy would greenlight a Kickstarter for uncensored Taimanin Asagi OAV footage....
Seriously though, the money gets put upfront. So if it meets their goal, they get paid. And we get porn.
Win/Win!
Finally something awesome!
So for $50 I can have a physical copy of the game? Bargain.. not.. Why so expensive? Clannad is popular yeah but $50 for a physical edition of a PC game is ridiculous, and the excuse that Japan charges a lot can't be used here, we're not in Japan.
You realize that a physical copy of the Japanese version of the game is well over $100 right?
You make it sound like games don't cost that much anyway.
Games over 10 years old? They do not.
Games over 10 years old don't cost more then 50 dollars? I gotta say, there are a lot of cartridge games from the nes and snes that disagree.
There is no official English release of this game, 10 years old or not. Someone has to get paid for their time in localizing the game, paying for packaging or the distribution platform, etc... If you want to steal the game, by all means, the fan translation is out there. If you're not stealing, you'll be paying over $100 to get a Japanese copy and then apply the patch. $50 for a new professional translation and a legit copy is very reasonable.
You always get games on Steam for a bargain anyways, why get so stingy when it comes to 50$. It's not like you've finished all the games in your library like most of us right? You're just gonna spend 50$ on a whole bunch of games you're not ever going to play on the next steam sale.
uhh.. wait what, i have the english version o.o are they scamming clueless people? wow
You have a Fan Translation not an Official version
if its in kickstarter, does it really count as official?
Are you stupid? You can't just go to kickstarter with an IP that doesn't belong to you.
They're not some random third party. They have already inquired Key about the licensing fees, so once they have the funding, they will become the official publisher of Clannad in the west.
Oculus Rift started in kickstarter. Does it really count as official as well or not?
