2003-2006 old days? Anime has been around for 100 years. And there has been plenty of violent anime during and before the 2003-2006 period. Wicked City and Ninja Scroll from the late 80s/early 90s come to mind.

I have a hard time taking this show seriously. It's like they are trying to be grimdark for the sake of it.
I don't really get that vibe, edginess has little to do with the content and everything to do with presentation. Even something as simple as pouring a bowl of cereal could be made edgy as fuck and mass murder could be made happy and serene. To me Cross Ange seems fairly indifferent and either abandons most of the hallmark edgemaker scenes after a few frames instead of really driving them home or purposely makes them as detached as possible so they carry little to no emotional impact, in a good way. It is a pity about the captain though, she seemed like the perfect character to generate a lot of yuri action.

It's a bullshit theme. It's cheap. It's pandering to peoples' emotional needs to protect little girls. And little girls in war is not fucking realistic. It just does not happen. They're not strong enough. Not logical enough. Not capable for discipline. The show is just fan service dressed up with a thin veneer of "fighting with cruel fate and society's discrimination".
It's cheap writing. Make me feel sad about a generic character and not someone I will automatically feel sad about and you have good writing. Only an inhuman shithead wouldn't feel depressed about a little girl dying. The show is just lazy writing but that's typical of Japanese anime most of the time.

Because pinky-winky anime sell. They're unrealistic. It's called escapism. We know that in a real war little girls get murdered and raped and that's that. In these anime at least they can kick some badass and that's kind of optimistic, that innocent good can triumph over evil.
