What about Seina Yamada? He was Touma before there was a Touma.
I was going to say that as well.
They even say in the show he was predisposed to bad luck and make use of it.
a guy from luckyman is unlucky? ahah
Disagree on the Touma bit.
All the girls want him..
All the girls are pretty hot too. Shit Misaki alone is sizzling hot and Kanzakai..Oriana, how LUCKY is this guy?
Just Itsuwa-chan's level of devotion for him is enough to consider him lucky...
He's too dense to notice so that counts as unlucky.
I think it's a long term thing. The girls who are falling for him are all monsters in their own right. If he doesn't watch himself an incident of apocalyptic proportions will break out around him.
Not to mention how he got those girls falling for him in the first place. Life-threatening conspiracies every time!
His right hand says he's unlucky not his daily life.
Shiro from Deadman Wonderland is about as tragic as it gets. Sliced to bits and experimented on to the point of insanity, forming a secondary personality to try to cope. That is shit for luck from day one.
Seems tame by comparison, though. Just insanity and a second personality? Pshh, that's not even protagonist material.
I guess the ultimate bad luck character in anime, Ataru Moroboshii from URUSEI YATSURA, is a bit too "old school" for this list. For that matter, Kyosuke Kasuga from KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD has awesome powers but they rarely ever do him any good and he's usually put in his place by Madoka Ayukawa, who has no ESPer abilities but a strong will.
In modern-ish anime, I gotta go with Hosaka from MINAMI-KE. A lot of his inability to get close to Haruka Minami is his own fault, he's too wrapped up in his daydreams to get around to actually talking to her, but I legitimately feel bad for the guy when he unintentionally passes on ideal opportunities to get to know her (i.e. the barbecue from episode 8 of MINAMI-KE TADAIMA when Akira from the other Minami family asks him to cook, but Akira only says it's a gathering with his sister's friends, not mentioning Haruka's presence at all, when he fully knows Haruka would be the person doing most of the cooking).
Also, Tomoko Kuroki/Mokocchi from WATAMOTE, even if, like Hosaka, a lot of her misfortunes are her own doing.
Touma isn't really more unlucky than other shounen protaginists, is he? It's just that he complains about it all the time that you pay attention to it and it has become a meme.
Plus there are a dozen or two girls he could have if he grew some balls. I guess that's the unlucky part?
Nah, he does get dragged into some heavy shit from teh get go. And when something good comes from it (like a haremette) it tends to go with severe beatings that sends him to intensive care.
Exactly. He's suffered from his "misfortune" from the day he was born. It was so bad his parents were forced to surrender him to Academy City when he was in kindergarten. Heck, his father nearly destroyed the world trying to cure him.
actually, I don't believe most girls in his harem beat him much, if at all. I mean, he did fight with half of them initially, but they seem to have been on quite friendly terms afterwards. That said, I believe the majority of the physical pain he suffers comes solely from Index and her tendency to be a god damn, freeloading biter.
@Yamato
I would say Misaka Mikoto hurt him more.
He wanted to help her against Accelerator, she shocked him until his heart stopped.
She hits/electrocutes him when she fails to convey what she thinks with words.
One time he got shot in the belly and her politic of "hit first, ask later" make him suffer when he got electroshocked again.
From vol.9+10, Touma is actually a masochist for Index's bites
If you discount him staying longer in hospitals than in school... and not because he got sick, but because every bone is his body got broke. Except for his first visit where he just lost all his memories of his entire life.
it is mentioned that his Imagine Breaker affects his luck, hence making him extremely unluky
This, it's mentioned in like, the first episode or so.
Index suggests that he's dispelling any fortune (or 'blessings', I think some subs might write) that touch him.
Hayate also employs a luck drain as a plot device, at least temporarily. The series tends to shenanigan on him anyway, though, pulling shit as it wishes.
It´s true that IB nullify all of his lucky , but it´s not the same of been unlucky , he is in a neutral state , you could see that by how Touma survived against foes whom were stronger than him...
You're thinking of luck in a different way. From my understanding, luck works differently from an eastern point of view. Basically, if you run out of luck completely, you die.
Touma seems lucky enough for me to get thousands woman at him. You know like index and misaka and "misaka". You know what I mean???
But having that many women want you is a curse if you thank about it, since many of them are violent & jealous types.
Touma got locked in a death battle with a bonnafide god and was killed 10,031 times. Lets see anyone else on the list tip that.
Yeah, and by that moment his harem has about 10,000 members. Both facts just cancel each out, so he counts as normal... Heck, he even added that certain god as his personal toy fairy just hours after that! Fukuo da!!!
And Shinji is just an idiot, most of what happens to him is either because he did something or was not capable of doing something
Rika Furude can top that.
She described her journey as taking a thousand years from her perspective which means she died at least 12,000 times.
You're off by a factor of 10. Rika claims she's lived for about 100 years, so she's died at least 8 times, but every time she does she reincarnates older than before, so it's never known exactly how many times she's been murdered.
Otherwise I agree she deserves to be put high on this list, but I still think Touma tops her. Because of his hand he'll face misfortune for his entire life.
Nagato Yuki them?
Spend thousands of years repeating the same two weeks because she should only observe.
Is the only one of her kind with real emotions but is unable to demonstrate them.
Change the entire world for Kyon just for him to decide that he liked the old world better.
Her love interest was just an accidental effect and stopped liking her when she fixed the bug.
I remember on the last episode when it's finally over she states her 1000 year journey was over.
We only get to see nine deaths but it's implied the time loop happened so many times Rika had lost count.
I gotta go with the Nagato argument.
Lots of characters are responsible for their own plight due to their being wretched rather than being unlucky (e.g. Kaneki).
But Nagato, as mentioned, is competent, tries hard, takes chances, makes changes, etc… all to no avail.
It's made even worse since, again as mentioned above, she can't just walk away. And even worse, Kyon does like her. How doomed can you be?
I'll add a couple of other names as well…
Homura… also fiercely competent, who was continuously re-dealt a hand that could never win, and who despite taking on the entire universe for Madoka, had to bury the emotions she felt even when she was around her.
Taichi from Chihayafuru… who despite being blessed in so many ways, and was successful at everything he didn't really care about, couldn't succeed in the three things that did have meaning to him, all centred around Chihaya.
Hanekawa… beautiful and intelligent but cursed with a character flaw that kept happiness out of reach for her.
Note… someone mentioned Okazaki from Clannad, but I think that while he certainly had much bad luck, he did at least find the love of his life, who returned it. Characters such as Sakagami, or Ichinose on the other hand, struck out with him and may never get another chance because while they have a lot of positives, they have some serious flaws as well. Ryou, who's cute, and Kyou, who's hot, are both personable and have each other for support, and will probably land on their feet but those other two… they're on their own.

Keep in mind, whether it was 100 or 1,000, she was repeating the same month for all of them. 12 months to a year, and that's how you come to that number.

Well, Tomoyo does have her brother (and in the anime, outside the OVA, she seems completely indifferent towards Tomoya), but so fucking agreed on Kotomi. Best girl, and she didn't even get a happy ending in an OVA like the others did (the anime may've covered her arc, but she still got nowhere with Tomoya despite clearly liking him, which makes it all the sadder). Her best hope is her route in the game, and even there, it's implied that it goes nowhere as the world keeps resetting until the player gets the "true" ending.
Yamato 22:49
Didn’t know that about her in the game but I can’t say that it surprises me. Given the unusual way in which they met and began to talk, along with how everyone knows who she is but no one knows her, it’s easy to see a forecast of continued loneliness with no break in sight. I thought she was rather charming in her own way but….
I should probably give the show a re-watch re: Tomoyo, to see what I missed or misinterpreted. My impression though, is that she’s also headed for a future of much solitude.
How is that unlucky if he survived?
the guy is the luckiest to have biribiri
I agree he is not the most pitiful.. Most unlucky but not pitiful. He stands up and fights when it is time even though he gets his ass kicked! He is not hiding in some corner whining about it.
He has the masculine magical girl force in his favor. He befriends the fuck out of girls with his fist.
Well, he doesn't have many magical girl friends in the anime yet (just Kanzaki IIRC. Arguably Index). Do not confuse espers and magicians.
Forgetting for the moment that Kanzaki as a girlfriend would be enough great fortune for any guy, you might say that his misfortune is that most of the magical girls he knows are nuns or older than him. Glorious Orsola… sigh.
I guess it depends on what you mean by unlucky. While he certainly has adversity in his life, he has a lot going for him as well. Although, it isn't really luck that has so many attractive young women interested in him. I don't think that he'd want to trade his current life either.
Except that practically every single one of them abandoned him in NT 10. Not a single member of his "harem" trusted his judgment in trying to save Othinus and put him through a hellish marathon of battles. Can't really say they're at his beck and call if a problem arises.
Actually, Index did trust him. But was angry at him because he just got away without telling her anything.
Even if we do not get to the novel where someone made him experience dieing like a million times in different and being revived after each death, he still got enough misfortune on his plate
You do know he lost every memory he ever had because of Index, he's such a nice guy he told her he cancelled the magic so she wouldn't feel bad.
Thie pitiest ones in the a certain's franchise are Mikoto's sisters...
Born to be killed
Aren't we all? Just most of us don't get to be cute Japanese schoolgirls before we die.
There are worse fates. (Not *many*, but a few.)
Personally, I find Ken Kaneiki the most unluckiest for being competently destroyed by the author and gore him inside a box after having his eyes stabbed twice in each one of them.
I really liked him as well, until he flat out got killed and the end of him.
Hasegawa should be #1. He is the personification of unlucky.
Exactly what i was thinking!
He is definitely the personification of unlucky. He is trapped in the MADAO Spiral!
yeah, he can even conjure an endless time loop on new year's day.
Okay, that was funny.
