I like this ufotable one better than the DEEN movie one, they stick to the VN and even the minor characters are portrayed well, including Shiro.
Aren't they still sticking to only one of several storylines from the vn? That means the character development will be fragmented regardless.
Adapting a VN to an anime just doesn't work, imo.
DEEN always does that to VNs — don't forget Higurashi and Umineko. They take one whole story and compress it and make it holey.

No, they don't. But they are the embodiments of the mentality of archers, “western” (Gilgamesh) and Japanese (EMIYA) respectively.
And since there are pretty much two requirements for the class—be able to think like an archer and use some sort of ranged weaponry—it means they both qualify.
In fact, both of them used more swords than that of the arrows that they have.

Well, Sakura and Rin are 16 so there's that. And I believe Rin was supposed to have what amounts to high-B breasts and Sakura something like high-C (in the visual novel it is said that those are D, but the bra size scale the Japanese use is a little ... off compared to that known in US or Europe or whenever else).
It was simply funnier to portrait Rin as completely flat when they were doing the first series, and seeing as Sakura was seen as a quasi-minor character she didn't stand out too much either.
Now, with the side characters, they might have gone overboard or not, and we wouldn't really know because most of those have only one sprite in the original visual novel or even none at all.
And on that note, Ilyasviel's aren't huge. Even though she is 18.
I remembered Taiga to be rather flat from the VN, but here...
Illyasviel's growth is off because of reasons that might or might not be explained later on in the anime.
