poor poor david. dude was forcfully smiling thinking to himself "fuck my life "XD
He's retiring very soon. i don;t think he gives a hoot.
Don't understand grandpas son. Some older gens do appreciate anime.... I mean very little of em but they do exist. Who knows, perhaps he is secretly a miku fans and he got tons of miku figures in his basement and doujinshi in one of his hidden hard drives. Men got their own secrets.
And I thought only women had those.
He was a lot nicer then I thought he would be. I applaud him for at least not being an asshole about something he thinks is probably ridiculous. Which is more then I can say for some of these anons.
ZOMG! this is ridiculous!
He's almost 70 years old. I think we should all cut him some slack if he can't come to terms with and accept something that authors like William Gibson were merely fantasizing about just 15 or so years ago.
I've heard older people describe Miku Hatsune as an "autotuned Stephen Hawking", and when you take into consideration that many of them were alive during a time when it would have been someone like Jimi Hendrix on stage instead of a hologram, I can honestly understand why they'd have such a bad case of future shock.
And besides, if David ever thought such a thing, it would have been two years ago, when SNSD performed live on his show.
It's Hatsune Miku you idiot.
@14:56 11/10/2014: Story of your life?
I bet your pedantic douchebaggery makes you plenty of friends...
The dirty little secret about people so quick to attempt to correct people regarding their supposedly incorrect usage of a Japanese given name before a surname, especially when speaking in English, is that it's most likely the literal extent of their knowledge of the Japanese language.
You may think that you're displaying intelligence, while stroking your e-penis over a self-proclaimed victory that you believe demonstrated how much smarter you are than an anonymous poster over the internet, but you're just coming off to the rest of the world as a jerk and a pedant.
I know people like you, at work, at school, and throughout the rest of my daily life, and the one common feature amongst all of them is that they are hated by just about everybody, with only the most understanding of people being able to, at most, barely put up with them.
Please, don't be that guy. I honestly feel sorry for people of your ilk.
Hatsune, Miku
That doesn't require calling them an idiot. Strange to do that on this site, yes, but not idiotic.
holy shit he pronounced the name right
cause david letter isnt an idiot, hes well educated :)
>Ball State
>Well educated
pick one please.
That took me by surprise, too!
Its pronounced hat-su-neh not hat-su-nei
He pronounced it wrong, like all Americans.
The way Americans pronounce vowels sounds like a super long vowel to Japanese. haaatsuuuneeee miiiikuuuu. Proper Japanese short vowel pronounciation is only 30 ms in duration
As far as I understood, length of vowel changed meaning in many cases for words. Pronunciation of vowel is mainly just accent, right?
In terms of pronunciation he did fine, except a slight inflection on the wrong syllable like westerners are used to.
Tough to write out breath sounds though. Guess it would be Hah-tsu-neh me-ku-, although I don't know how to write out or describe a cut off effectively at the end of 'ku' so it doesn't get pronounced 'koo' although technically 'koo' is correct, even if meant to be shortened.
The last 'e' in Hatsune is short. You don't change your tongue position or mouth openness midway pronouncing the letter.
Here's how you pronounce the 'e' in Japanese
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VPJIwff3w0I#t=123 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VPJIwff3w0I#t=123]
For some reason it sounds like native English speakers are adding an extra 'i' at the end of 'e' ('ei') when trying to pronounce it.
no one gives a shit
It's a much better pronunciation than most. hearing Ha-tsu-nei is better than hearing Huh-tsu-nay.
All these downvotes on something that's completely correct, lol...
'は・つ・ね・み・く' is always going to be pronounced hah-tsu-neh-mi-ku (all vowels in this are of short length).
Weeaboos lashing out and downvoting because their delusions of fluency are being threatened?
The thing is that you pronounced it wrong.
well arent you just a smartass
Yeah, ignorance. Completely nothing to do with differences of languages. Japanese are not ignorant when they say "sank you", its all calculated to ridicule english users, right?
Srsly his pronouciation was slightly off, but everyone would understand.
Yeah, shame on this person for BEING RIGHT and knowing how to pronounce it! Instead let's promote American ignorance!
YEAH! MURRIKA MURRIKA CLAP CLAP CLAP.
Horrible song choice. Terrible quality projector. Just use a Japanese song! She's Japanese!
It's better to hear a nice sounding song and not understand what she's singing than hear a slapped together, high-pitched mess and not understand what she's singing....
Maybe use a good Japanese song and set up a karaoke style subtitle prompter above the screen or something.

They tried to Americanize her.
Conclusion: It's impossible.
Toyota already did that.
Good Ruck with that. Hotdog love..
that song was hard to listen to, it was like.. noise pollution.. i prefer her songs in japanese.
Nor. Mal. Taste.
Wapanese deviant queer.
Wee. A. Boo.
In order to Americanize Miku, she would have to start twerking. The day that happens is the day I decide that it's time to bury myself alive.
*Tries to erase memory* *fails*
Alright! Bury yourself alive!

Mother of God...
I think they should have subtitled the English song. There are probably a number of people who didn't even realize it was English.
Wait, that was supposed to be English? I thought it was just vocal noise. I could not make out a single word.
That was English?
I thought it was just poor audio and that was why I couldn't catch her Japanese. As if that was English.
Close captions is your friend and the streaming also support from Dave Letterman site, check it out
I totaly agree with you. Even the tuning was bad. I don't what they was thinking...
they intendet to put miku in a bad light if you know what mean D;
Try hearing the song "Sharing The World" but the MJQ Retuned one. You'll see the full potential of English Miku.
Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEZpdWa9n3Q&list=UUttJFMzWnbhA2f7GT9m6u-Q
And this is The David Letterman Show's performance should've turned if the MJQ version was used instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRNZycEaCYY&list=UUttJFMzWnbhA2f7GT9m6u-Q&index=1
That sounds better, but still not good enough for a "debut" performance. It went from a garbage sounding non-language, to Engrish, which is better no doubt, but it'd still be difficult to understand for many Americans unaccustomed to Japanese language and accents. (yes, Miku can do English, be she's still far from sounding like a native English speaker)
Garbage non-language<Engrish<English
Thanks, that is perfectly audible.
"Sharing the World" was the theme for Miku Expo. Since it was in English and Letterman has an English speaking audience as the majority. They did "Glass Wall" (also English) at the concert and that could be used too.
But they won't the subtitles because they can't read. Reading subtitles is a skill that mundanes don't have.
I understand her speaking Japanese far better than I understood what she said in this song, and I am far from fluent in Japanese (Still far from being able to pass JLPT N5, even). What was she singing?
She's not Japanese. Its a piece of animation with choreographed beeps and buzzes. It can be anything in the realm of so called art.
Well, but she is designed by japanese programmers in japan, for the japanese demographic by a japanese company.
She is japanese because her name is japanese. Flawless logic.
2:21
lol somebody's butthurt
22:05
Hahaha what fucking idiot
that's what I call getting OWNED haha
In fact, Miku was made by spanish programmers from Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra).
The first Vocaloid sang in Catalan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHxpaUfeWd4
Anon 22:21 In fact you're an idiot. The original Vocaloid synthesizer program was developed at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and later developed into a commercial product by Yamaha. Miku however was developed by Crypton Future Media in Sapporo, Japan.
So yes Miku is in fact designed by Japanese programers, for a Japanese demographic, by a Japanese company.
In fact, the vast majority of popular vocaloids were developed by Japanese companies.
In particular, relatively little work's been done on American English phonemes. There are sounds and combinations of sounds absent in Japanese and most Latin-based languages.
It is only a machine. Miku has no characteristics other than "appeal to target audience" and that audience is American here.
She's a character made by a Japanese person using voice samples from a Japanese voice actress in Japan. She's Japanese.
All I'm hearing is a whole lot of nothing. Provide some actual evidence that anything I said was wrong and I'll listen.
Shup up stupid tard, for the fault of idiots like you, people think to all miku fans are a bunch of forever alones virgo freacks.
Yamaha sound chip that was used in the very 1st Sound Blaster 8bit audio card. Same deal that made her voice in 2007. Was the guy who provided the custom artwork for Miku who should get credit for creating her.
But equal, so the guys of the University of Fabra never make the software Vocaloid, Miku never exist man.
